Why do we need a reason to love? The world demands it as if love must justify itself before it is allowed to exist, as if affection must come with credentials, proof of its worthiness, a ledger of cause and effect. But love, in its truest form, defies this logic — it simply is.
Yet, we are not allowed to leave it at that. We live in a world that reduces love to transactions, where compatibility is calculated, and where emotions are scrutinized under the cold, unforgiving light of rationality. We are asked, “Why do you love them?” And our answers must satisfy the invisible jury that dictates whether our hearts have chosen well.
But love does not always make sense. It is not the careful weaving of logic, nor the result of meticulous reasoning. It does not exist because of a checklist, yet society tells us it must. Love is expected to fit neatly into the framework of acceptability. If it is inconvenient, illogical, or without benefit, the world calls it foolish. If it is too passionate, it is deemed reckless; if it is too quiet, it is mistaken for indifference.
So we force ourselves to name reasons — to build a case for what our hearts already know. We say we love them because of their kindness, their mind, and their laughter. But what if they change? What if time strips away the very things we once named? Does love then expire, like a contract rendered void?
The world is cruel to love. It demands explanation, yet punishes uncertainty. It asks for permanence, yet thrives on instability. It tells us to follow our hearts, but only if the path is reasonable. And in the end, love — pure, irrational, untamed — must fight to survive in a world that insists it proves itself worthy.
Perhaps that is why we cling to reasons. Not because love needs them, but because we need them to defend what the world refuses to believe in: that some things, the most important things, exist beyond reason.
