keeping an open line of communication with teachers.

She writes, “As a teacher myself,

I think having open communication

is imperative in a student success.

I feel like it should go without saying,

but the more information teachers and parents have,

the faster and easier they can change course, if need be.

As my daughter gets older,

I find that I need to communicate two things to the teacher,

to help them help her in the classroom.

The first is that although she seems like

she understands everything and doesn’t need assistance,

she needs more than you think.

The other is the complete opposite, which is that just

because she needs assistance with reading and spelling,

doesn’t mean she isn’t bright and shouldn’t be challenged.

I hope this helps to remind the teacher

that Devon thinks and learns differently.

And based on the learning activity,

may or may not need assistance.

It is important that she gets that assistance,

but not so much that it stunts her growth

or teaches her learned helplessness.”

When we’re working with our children over time,

we want to make sure that we teach our children

how to know what they do and don’t know.

This is extremely important for when kids progress

through the educational system and if they decide

to go to college or off into the work world.

Because on the one hand they can have confidence

in knowing what they know and being willing to engage

in specific activities without seeking help.

And on the other hand,

they can learn that it’s okay to seek support

when you really need support.
