Freedom of religion is enshrined in the American Constitution, which may be why many online were pleased when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the formation of what he called a “religious liberty task force,” that will enforce a 2017 Justice Dept. memo ordering government agencies to take the broadest possible interpretation of “religious liberty” when enforcing federal laws. Of course, many critics are already lining up to take a shot at the task force, arguing that it could prevent other agencies from enforcing laws in their own jurisdictions. For example, the memo prohibits the Internal Revenue Service from threatening the tax-exempt status of religious organizations lobbying for political candidates, which is prohibited by law. Another worry is that the door could be opened for businesses and organizations to discriminate against LGBT Americans under the guise of religious liberty. Social is split on the task force, with Sessions’ idea getting 59 percent negative opinions online, mostly revolving around how fallout could affect vulnerable communities. –Hugo Guzman
