Many fans were concerned when writer John Rozum announced he was leaving Static Shock after launching the title as part of DC's "New 52" initiative. As one of the last people from the original Milestone Media cadre working in comics, he was considered a standard bearer for the legacy of the departed Dwayne McDuffie.
However, in the shadow of New York Comic-Con, DC Comics delivered a bit of news that may assuage some doubts …
Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee have turned to one of the next generation of comic bookwriters to take creative control of DC's most electric personality, announcing today that beginning with Static Shock #5, Marc Bernardin is taking over writing chores on the series.
A former senior editor at Entertainment Weekly and EW.com, Bernardin transitioned from journalism to comic book writing in 2009. Having enjoyed previous success with Wolverine: One Night Only and X-Men Origins: Nightcrawler for Marvel Comics, Bernardin ventured to DC's corner of the comics industry in 2010 when he co-wrote a run on The Authority with Adam Freeman for Wildstorm Productions.
Why CBR neglected to mention the Glyph Award-nominated Genius (which also won Top Cow's second Pilot Season contest) or the equally brilliant Highwaymen (both alongside his partner in words Adam Freeman) is a mystery, let alone his turn as a staff writer on the SyFy network series Alphas. Nonetheless, Bernardin has proven he has the right kinds of writing chops for this kind of action adventure.
As well, it did not slip past the notice of this site that Bernardin makes the second Black person to write a monthly comic book for one of the two biggest publishers in comics … and both for DC Comics, writing books with Black lead characters. Interesting.
