Marvel is a pioneer of transmedia storytelling, with its Animated Universe interacting with trading cards, comic books, and video games. Each individual narrative has the ability to stand on its own but still makes a worthy contribution to the grand narrative; the consumption of all installments across media channels ensures a more enriching experience. If you’re a fan of good old-fashioned mayhem, there’s a treat for you. Marvel’s characters and the images associated with them appear on t-shirts, travel pillows, shampoo bottles, pizza cutters, jigsaw puzzles, and even grocery bags.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent your happiest days exploring the Marvel Universe, going to the cinema to see Captain America, or reading the occasional comic book (e.g., House of M). Superheroes are powerful and attractive role models for boys and adult men alike, as they teach teamwork, selflessness, and empathy towards others, amongst other things. Though Captain America and Iron Man have their fair share of disagreements, they’re there for one another. Villains, too, are important for the storyline – without them, the hero can’t shine.
There are so many strong male role models in the X-Men. It’s rumored that the Marvel Universe will create a new group of mutants that will define the X-Men movies, each with a pivotal role to play. As we look back, here are the top male characters.
Cyclops
The X-Men is undoubtedly one of the most important teams in the Marvel Universe, charged with the mission of protecting the world that loathes and fears them due to their unusual abilities and appearance. With his powerful optic beams and tactical genius, Cyclops leads the X-Men on their missions. He’s sacrificed more to the cause than anyone else, which explains why the Cyclops is a legend, created by writer Stan Lee and artist/co-artist Jack Kirby in 1963. Professor Xavier chose Cyclops as his successor because he’s capable of working with anyone from Jean Grey to Wolverine. In many ways, he represents the X-Men’s core ideals.
Wolverine
Wolverine can regenerate severely damaged or destroyed tissue within seconds, to say nothing of the fact that he’s armed with adamantium claws that can cut through anything. He’s a member of the X-Force, Alpha Fight, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers. Often portrayed as brave, selfless, and determined, Wolverine has traits we can all imitate, and seeing him in action reminds us of what’s possible. Wolverine has taken several young mutants under his wing over the years, such as Rogue, Jubilee, and Kate Pryde, to name a few. Over the years, the bond has strengthened.
Starting out as someone with just very sharp claws, Wolverine became one of the most powerful mutants, and he’s been alive for so many years that he doesn’t even know his age. Wolverine can fight with his claws, with guns, and with various melee weapons. One thing fans immediately notice is that Wolverine is an excellent tracker, which means that if he’s decided that someone has to die, there’s no stopping him from finding out where they are. If Daredevil can smell perfume from several blocks away, Wolverine’s sense of smell is way better than that. Many people grew up playing action figures, and collecting them makes it possible to relive childhood memories. Funko has just launched in Canada, just in case you’re interested.
Gambit
The charming thief Gambit leaves behind crime to join the X-Men, using his mutant power to charge items with explosive energy whilst fighting evil. Though he often disagreed with the X-Men’s sense of morality, Gambit became a valuable team member because he’s a born strategist and has superior fighting skills. All X-Men are good fighters, but Gambit is able to transform inanimate objects into dangerous weapons, which provides him enhanced strength and agility. The charm channeled through his voice allows Gambit to influence any mind, so he can easily get others to trust what he says and agree with anything he suggests.
Colossus
Colossus merges raw power with a tender soul and is driven by his fierce, familiar loyalty. Created by Dave Cockrum and Len Wein in 1975, Colossus is a Russian mutant born to a simple farm life that can transform himself into a metallic form, therefore becoming the strongest of the team. He’s battled the Shadow King, Hulk, the Juggernaut, Cassandra Nova, etc. As part of the X-Men, Colossus becomes friends with Storm, Wolverine, the Nightcrawler, and Kate Pryde. Since he’s a force to be reckoned with, Colossus brings strength to the heroic team.
Mr. Sinister
Few villains have been a thorn in the side as Mr. Sinister, the mastermind behind the Marauders, that is, the assassins who perpetrated the Mutant Massacre. Having obtained genetic samples from many subjects throughout the years, Mr. Sinister has experimented with cloning, cheating his death repeatedly and even acquiring a mutant gene. He created a clone of Jean Grey, Madelyne Prior, who possesses powers that are almost identical and whose mind is closed to Professor Xavier. Mr. Sinister is telepathic, which means he can trick the minds of others in various ways, and can move objects with mental power.
Deadpool
And finally, there’s Deadpool, a mutant with accelerated regenerative abilities that first appeared in the New Mutants in 1990. He bears a striking resemblance to Deathstroke, a recurring villain in the DC Universe, who is a mercenary and an assassin for hire. Born and raised in Canada, Deadpool found himself at the doorstep of the Weapon X program, intended to induce superpowers for military purposes. Wolverine was also part of the project. Deadpool is a fairly generic hero with little else to his personality or skills – the extent to which he can regenerate is absurd.
The Takeaway
Strong role models are critical for men as they help them fully mature from an emotional standpoint. The superheroes of the Marvel Universe can be fantastic role models because they teach qualities such as teamwork, honesty, bravery, and a sense of duty, but let’s not forget about the mistakes, flaws, and struggles that make them human. Most importantly, superheroes change depending on what’s required of them.
