Approaching someone you’re attracted to can be somewhat intimidating, because of different reasons- reasons like most guys are just naturally comfortable in their own skin, fear of rejection or being given cold shoulders, social anxiety, low self esteem and others.
Especially if guys are new to the experience, it’s usually awkward. For many young men, taking the first step always feels overwhelming and the fear of rejection is a huge barrier. But if you have ever had the nerves to walk up to a lady to initiate a conversation you will know the thrill.
In this article I’m going to share my own nerve-wracking first experience of approaching a girl, the lessons I learnt over the years and practical tips for anyone looking to improve their social skills.
A Nerve-Wracking First Attempt: My Cold Approach Story at 15
I was 15 years old, in the shopping center of my town, and about to do my first-ever cold approach. I was with a friend of mine, and we had been walking around this shopping center over and over again, neither of us with the confidence to actually approach any of the girls we saw around. Just as it was almost time to go home, I spotted a slim, nice looking beautiful lady.
She was a staff attendant in one of the clothing shops in the shopping complex, looking about our age or maybe a little older. I decided to stop hesitating and go for it.
The Awkwardness of First Experiences
As I was walking over to her, my friend awkwardly stepped aside, not wanting to be seen with me. The fear hit hard—I was tense and agitated, my brain was racing with nervous thoughts. I managed to stammer, “You’re really pretty, I’m so sorry,” then immediately turned and walked away. I never even waited to see if she would reply.
My friend was off in the distance, pointing and laughing, recording me on his small phone. But as I left the shopping center, I felt a strange sense of relief. Awkward as it was, even till today I’m actually glad I did it.
Fast Forward: The Power of Repetition in Building Confidence
Now, fast forward 11 years now, getting into the habit of talking to women has become a skill for me. It was cringe and scary at first, but I made a conscious effort to get better by pushing through my fears. Today, after 100 or 200 cold approaches, I approach women naturally and confidently. I wouldn’t feel this way if I hadn’t done all those awkward approaches as a teenager. Practicing this skill has allowed me to feel more like a man that I am truly.
Key One: Embrace Full Breathing for Confidence
The first and most important step in approaching women is to breathe freely. Whether it is cold approaches, getting better grades, or gaining confidence in any area of life, proper breathing is essential. . Before any approach, take one forceful, full breath, filling your lower stomach, and you’ll feel calmer and more grounded.
Breathing may sound simple, but it’s one of the important tools of managing nerves and building confidence. When you want to approach a lady, fear and anxiety naturally will kick in, making your heart race very fast and your mind running with wild doubts and other thoughts. Proper breathing will not only make you calm but also project you as confident.
When you breathe deeply and freely, it helps you manage the tension and awkwardness that comes with fear.
Key Two: Let Your Feet Lead The way
The second tip I found effective is to command your legs to walk toward her the moment you see her. Taking action is often the hardest part of approaching someone new, and it involves just one simple step: getting your legs to move towards your goal.
This might sound simple and easy but the mental resistance is the greatest undoing that usually holds people back. Commanding your leg implies you bypass the natural hesitation.
Overthinking is the number one obstacle that prevents guys from approaching ladies. Don’t overthink; just turn your brain off and start walking. If you hesitate, your brain will start coming up with reasons you should not do it, and the fear will grow. The most attractive approaches are when you walk over confidently right after making eye contact.
Key Three: Break the Ice with One Simple Word
One of the hurdles of approaching a lady is opening your mouth to say the first word, and the greater pressure always comes from the “perfect” opener. Here’s the thing, you don’t need a perfect opener. even saying a simple word like “hello” is a huge victory on its own.
Think about it: how many attractive women have you walked past without saying anything? If you can bring yourself to say just one word, like “hello” or “hi,” that’s huge progress.
By focusing on these few steps of initiating conversation, making it easier to build momentum and eventually having meaningful conversations.
The more you do it, the more comfortable and natural it becomes. And just like in sales, increasing your “leads” (women you speak to) increases your “success rate.”
Build Confidence Through Small, Daily Challenges
When I started, I set a challenge for myself to say “hello” to 10 girls per day. After a while, I found it so much easier to talk to women I didn’t know. Just saying one word opens the door to real conversation. The more you do it, the more your confidence and dating life will grow.
This works like magic because it involves breaking challenges into small manageable steps that leads to consistent progress. Think of it like muscle building, every day you go to the gym to engage your body in light and consistent activities, and in the long run everything gathers up to your body fitness.
Here are few steps I suggest you should use:
– Set achievable goals: Maybe saying “hello” to 5 new ladies every day
– Practice daily for consistency: find a way of doing it every day: go to grocery stores and coffee shops or any social or religious gatherings to carry out the task daily.
– Track your progress: Genuinely check how well you’re progressing and how easily it is getting.
– Reward your small wins: Give yourself special treats for your small accomplishments, this is to reinforce the positive behavior you’re cultivating.
– Gradually raise the challenge: Move from just saying “hi” to introducing yourself and asking a few questions about the ladies you’re interested in.
– Reflect on your experience: Every week or day, take time to reflect on what you have learnt and how you’re feeling.
– Keep pushing until it feels natural: Stick to the process until it feels like your second nature.
By breaking down the approach process into daily achievable goals and challenges you’re settling yourself up for lasting success.
In Conclusion
Building confidence in social interactions is a journey that starts with small manageable steps. Whether it is about initiating conversation or collecting ladies’ number, finally letting the cat out of the bag, everything requires action, commiting to daily challenges, each effort moves you towards a comfortable and natural approach to the ladies you love.
