There are situations where we can’t refuse to help because what happens isn’t always about ourselves. Detaching oneself, at certain times, seeing others’ needs, is what will make us better and less selfish people — and the world needs that. However, we can’t answer all calls promptly, or we’ll end up getting sick, in body and soul.
Human beings have behaviors that can’t be easily explained, like devaluing what has already become a habit, a certainty. Often, people overvalue a small gesture while not seeming to care about immense help, simply because they were sure they would receive that immense help. It’s like this with friends, coworkers, and even in romantic relationships.
Perhaps this is one of the greatest obstacles of the human race: the difficulty of being grateful or of seeing who is always there by their side, no matter what.
However, if the person who has always answered ends up refusing to do so just once, ingratitude comes with everything, as if the person immediately forgets how much they have already been helped by the one who, for some reason, this time does not answer their call.
Most of the time, that’s how things are: if you are available every time you are requested, whether by a friend or a suitor, they will hardly remember you when everything is fine or when they already have someone by their side.
In other words, our value is directly related to how much we value ourselves. What is too easy doesn’t attract, nor can it convey its real value, unfortunately.
Obviously, we should be available for some people, like our parents, for example, among other situations where refusal would be nothing less than selfish meanness.
However, limits will always be necessary so that they don’t confuse our willingness with servitude and our purest feelings with an opportunity.
When we act against our dignity, we are not helping anyone but burying our self-esteem little by little. Believe me, it’s like that, in most cases.
