In recent months, photographer Laurence Lao has achieved a series of advances across international photography awards and gallery exhibition systems. His work Suspended was selected as a Semi-Finalist in the Head On Photo Awards 2025 in Australia and entered the festival’s official exhibition program during the Head On Photo Festival. At the same time, Suspended and his photographic series Human Syntax received Honorable Mention awards in the Professional Category (Special / Analog-Film) of the ND Awards 2025, with both works publicly exhibited. In addition, Passage and Staircase to Nothing were respectively selected for two themed exhibitions in the On-Line Annex of Black Box Gallery (USA) in 2025, becoming part of the gallery’s annual curatorial release sequence.
As one of Australia’s major photography festivals with an international scope, the Head On Photo Festival attracts more than 400,000 visitors, features over 900 photographers, and spans multiple venues and public programs across Sydney. Laurence Lao’s inclusion in the publicly released list of Head On Photo Awards Semi-Finalists 2025 signifies that Suspended has passed a formal stage of selection within the festival’s awards framework and entered its annual core exhibition lineup.

Beyond the Head On recognition, the official winners’ pages of the ND Awards 2025 confirm that Suspended and the series Human Syntax each received Honorable Mention distinctions in the Professional category. The Neutral Density Photography Awards (ND Awards) is an annual international competition open to photographers worldwide, with submissions reviewed by an international jury comprising gallery directors, publishers, editors, and established photographers. Awarded works are published in the official Winners’ Gallery and related platforms, receiving sustained international visibility and media exposure. With a total prize pool exceeding USD 10,000, the ND Awards maintain a consistent level of professional recognition and influence within the global photography field.

Suspended
Notably, Lao advances his practice with Human Syntax as a central structural framework, with Suspended and Passage functioning as individual nodes within the broader series. These single images are independently extracted, evaluated, and validated across different juried and curatorial contexts, before being reintegrated into the series’ overall narrative and formal system. This approach—project-led, with single works circulating across multiple platforms—reflects a prevalent mode of dissemination in contemporary photography across awards, galleries, and institutions.

Staircase to nothing
In North America, Lao’s work has further entered formal gallery curatorial mechanisms. Black Box Gallery, a U.S.-based institution focused on contemporary photography, operates through themed exhibitions and juried selection processes. Its On-Line Annex constitutes an official exhibition stream within the gallery’s programming. Within this context, Passage and Staircase to Nothing were each officially listed and published in the gallery’s online exhibition pages in 2025, indicating curatorial and juried recognition by a professional North American gallery platform.

Passage
Complementing these gallery listings is the institutional documentation of exhibitions. Praxis Photo Center / Praxis Gallery has a long-standing record of curating contemporary photography exhibitions and publicly archiving them through exhibit books, online features, and virtual tours. Lao’s work Passage was presented through both online and offline formats within a Praxis project and incorporated into its exhibition publications and public archival system, establishing a traceable institutional exhibition record.
In addition, Laurence Lao is a member of the China Film & Television Technology Society. According to the society’s official profile, it was established in 1982 as a national, academic, non-profit organization and operates as a member body within the China Association for Science and Technology framework, providing long-term academic exchange and professional services in the film, television, and related technical fields. For a photographic practitioner, this membership serves as supplementary context for his professional engagement.
From the public release of the Head On Photo Awards Semi-Finalists list, to annual inclusion in the ND Awards Winners’ Gallery, and further to the documented listings within the online catalogues and exhibition archives of Black Box Gallery and Praxis, Laurence Lao has established a series of independent, verifiable public records across international platforms. More importantly, these records collectively point to his central role as a photographer advancing a coherent, series-based practice anchored in Human Syntax, while simultaneously entering international juried and curatorial systems through both individual works and grouped projects—resulting in a clearly traceable and internationally visible body of work throughout 2025.
