On LinkedIn: Daniel Goleman pontificates on the “Antidote to the Dark Side of Emotional Intelligence” – meaning “the manipulative use of talents in EI in the service of one’s own interest, and at the expense of others.” Goleman finds that there are many varieties of EI, and of course we all know here at the Good Men Project that, “In general, a high level of EI predicts better success in school and in career, in relationships and in leading a fulfilled life. Empathic concern is what to look for when hiring, when promoting, and when developing leadership talent.”

On Forbes: Kathy Caprino tells the story of Polar Explorer Alison Levine, “who served as team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, and climbed the highest peak on each continent and skied to both the North and South Poles—a feat known as the Adventure Grand Slam, which fewer than forty people in the world have achieved… Her success in extreme environments is noteworthy given she has had three heart surgeries and suffers from Raynaud’s disease, which causes the arteries that feed her fingers and toes to collapse in cold weather—leaving her at extreme risk for frostbite.” Yes, her book just came out, yes it’s a best-seller, and yes my brain got frostbite just reading about all the coldness. She does sound like a true leader, however.

Lolly Daskal of Lead From Within jumps into the fray of the ongoing battle between leaders vs. managers, with some simplisms that left me perhaps more confused than before. I do, however, love this one: “Leaders break rules. Managers make rules.”
