Are you interested in adopting a minimalistic lifestyle but unsure of where to begin? I have compiled a list of 25 minimalism tips to help you get started right away.
It’s important to note that minimalism can be defined differently by each person. It doesn’t necessarily mean having white walls or selling all your possessions. Instead, it can involve making small changes in your everyday life to declutter your mind and your environment. The beauty of minimalism is that your inner and outer spaces influence each other. By organizing your rooms, you can structure your thoughts, and clear thoughts can be reflected in your physical space.
Living minimally means making conscious decisions
This mindset has had a profound impact on my life, and I have been living this way for many years. I no longer define myself through material possessions but instead focus on collecting beautiful moments and experiences. This has given me a tremendous sense of freedom. It frees up mental space as every item in my external environment requires my attention and mental capacity.
My rooms have also become wonderfully airy and clear. I intentionally surround myself with carefully selected favorite items, creating a home that is not just a shelter but also a personal oasis of well-being. It is a place where I can recharge and find strength.
Well, now is the perfect time to embrace minimalism and make it your own. Start by implementing these tips and witness the positive changes it brings to your life…
Start of the day
✔️ Initiate your day without the presence of your phone by using a traditional alarm clock instead
Avoid the temptation to check emails or social media immediately upon waking up. Embrace this moment of tranquility and engage in activities such as observing your thoughts, visualizing your day, meditating, or reflecting on your dreams.
By doing so, you prioritize your own well-being and avoid the distractions that come from external sources. This shift in morning routine promotes mental peace and prepares you for the day ahead.
✔️ Consciously allocate time for your morning coffee or tea
Find a comfortable spot, savor each sip slowly, and relish in the moment. This act of self-care allows you to connect with your body, organize your thoughts, and immerse yourself in the present. It serves as a small yet meaningful gesture of self-love and replenishment.
✔️ Delight in a breakfast free from distractions
Resist the urge to engage with the radio, your phone, or the newspaper. Instead, activate your senses and fully experience the act of eating. Chew each bite deliberately, relish the flavors, and let go of external pressures and stressors.
✔️ Consider waking up earlier to allocate extra time for yourself
Use this additional hour to engage in activities that nourish you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Reflect on what activities strengthen you and make a list. Choose one from the list and make an effort to incorporate it into your morning routine. This intentional start to your day sets the tone and determines the energy with which you approach the rest of your day.
✔️ Take conscious steps and be fully present in each stride
Utilize your walks as moments to reconnect with yourself. If possible, opt to get off public transportation one stop earlier and complete the remaining distance on foot. While this may take a bit longer, this morning exercise stimulates your circulation, prolongs the peaceful morning ambiance, and facilitates mental clarity.
Household
✔️ Reduce the influx of junk mail by placing a “Please no advertising” sign on your mailbox and opting out of unsolicited advertising. This saves you time and minimizes the annoyance of dealing with unwanted mail.
✔️ Declutter your spice cabinet by discarding expired spices and keeping only the ones you regularly use. Consider transferring them to attractive glass jars with labels for a more visually appealing and enjoyable cooking experience. Remember, quality over quantity when it comes to spices.
✔️ Unsubscribe from newsletters that do not interest you or provide value to your inbox. By narrowing down your subscriptions to essential newsletters, you create clarity and reduce email-related stress.
✔️ Organize your hallway wardrobe to create a more inviting and tidy entrance. Evaluate if all jackets need to be stored there or if keeping one per person and dedicating space for guest jackets would suffice. A clear and organized hallway promotes a sense of relaxation when you come home.
✔️ Tackle the piles of letters that accumulate in corners of your hallway or kitchen. Immediately decide what to do with each letter — whether to throw it away, file it, or set it aside for later reading. Create a folder for letters you want to read and work on, allowing you to utilize waiting times or breaks to address your correspondence.
✔️ If you have a dog, declutter their crate or toy collection. Donate any unused toys, leashes, harnesses, or brushes to an animal shelter. This not only benefits other animals but also brings a positive change to your own spirit.
✔️ Declutter your medicine cabinet by sorting out expired medications. Ensure proper disposal by either placing them in the residual waste, taking them to a recycling center, or dropping them off at a pharmacy. Remember to never dispose of medicines in the toilet. Evaluate what medications you still need and discard any unnecessary ones.
✔️ Go through your collection of magazines and newspapers. If you haven’t read them within the next two weeks, consider throwing them away. Alternatively, you can rip out articles of interest or place them in a designated waiting folder. Regularly clean out this folder as well.
✔️ Create clarity on your window sills by removing clutter. Discard dried plants and only keep the decorations that you genuinely enjoy. Arrange the remaining items thematically, grouping plants together or bundling vases. This will create a sense of calm and provide visually appealing focal points.
✔️ Clear out the odds and ends drawer that exists in many households. Empty the contents onto a table and reorganize them. Get rid of duplicate items such as pens, bottle openers, or lighters. Keep only your favorite items and those that you actually use. Donate or give away the rest.
✔️ Assess the decorative items in your home, especially those received as gifts. Consider whether each item truly aligns with your personal style and preferences. Let go of anything that doesn’t evoke a positive feeling or hold sentimental value. Remember that it’s okay for our tastes to evolve, and not all items need to be permanently kept.
✔️ Streamline your bathroom products by questioning the necessity of each soap, shampoo, or cream. Keep only the items you intend to use within the next three weeks. Assign each household member a basket or small box for their bathroom items. These can be stored in the bathroom cupboard or individual rooms and brought out daily. The limited space in each basket or box promotes organization and structure in the cupboard and on surfaces.
Leisure time
✔️ Practice mindful shopping by only purchasing what you will actually use. Avoid thoughtless and impulsive purchases by taking a moment to pause and reflect before buying. Consider whether the item is a necessary purchase, a reward, or something that will truly become a favorite. Asking yourself five questions before each purchase can help you make more intentional buying decisions.
✔️ Challenge yourself to turn off the TV for a week and explore alternative ways to relax and unwind. Engage in activities such as evening walks, relaxing baths, crafting, writing, or trying new baking recipes. By consciously avoiding television, you create valuable time for yourself and discover new sources of relaxation.
✔️ Make time for reading by incorporating it into your daily routine. Even reading just two pages before bed each night can lead to completing several books in a year. Once you establish a daily reading habit, you may find yourself naturally increasing your reading volume over time.
✔️ Take the time to clean up and organize the inside of your car. Even if you tend to put it off or don’t prioritize it, maintaining a clean and organized car can contribute to a sense of well-being. Consider placing boxes in the trunk to sort and organize items you transport. Bringing structure and order to your car can create a satisfying feeling.
Final thoughts
Embrace self-love and let go of negative self-perceptions. Instead of dismissing compliments or having a distorted image of yourself, take a closer look at how you perceive and talk about yourself. Reflect on your self-criticism and strive to deeply appreciate and accept yourself and your body. Free yourself from the opinions of others and prioritize your own self-worth.
Release expectations of others and avoid disappointment in their behavior towards you. Recognize that everyone is different and practice acceptance rather than trying to change or convert others. Let go of resistance and understand that having high expectations can lead to dissatisfaction and frustration.
Avoid blaming others and instead take responsibility for your own actions. Notice when you engage in blaming behavior and consider how you would prefer to be treated in similar situations. Shift towards cooperation and collaboration rather than assigning blame.
Cultivate a positive mindset and choose to see the glass as half full. Recognize that you have the power to choose between positive and negative thoughts, love and fear, light and dark. Train your mind to focus on the positive aspects of life, just like exercising a muscle.
