I was lying to myself.
It wouldn’t work the way I hoped, it was a fallacy.
Spending time building someone’s else dream, wouldn’t get me closer. But further!
Someone has lied to us.
The worse thing is we have come to believe that the lie is truth.
For years, people encouraged me to attend school and find a job.
To become a responsible member of society, get a home, a family, and this is living the dream.
All these things are good, yet how does building another person’s dream, get you closer to reaching yours?
…
Dreams are the fabric of our aspirations, the fuel that propels us forward.
But often, we find ourselves chasing someone else’s dream.
We live a life that doesn’t match our deepest desires.
It is key to embrace our own dreams.
We must know the barriers that hinder us from going after our dreams.
We also need strategies to break free and carve out unique paths to fulfillment.
…
The Allure of Someone Else’s Dream:
Growing up, many of us learn to follow set paths.
Society, our families, or peers lay out these paths.
We’re taught to chase prestigious careers.
We must conform to society’s expectations.
We’re told to pick stability over passion.
It’s easy to fall into this trap, to adopt someone else’s dream as our own, mistaking their desires for ours.
…
I recall my own experience of succumbing to societal pressures.
Raised in a family where no one else had gone on to college. I felt compelled to do so.
I became a manager of a prestigious organization, with a great compensation benefit.
Yet I felt disconnected from my true self.
It took courage and self-reflection to break free from this mold.
I then pursued my passion for creativity and helping others.
My family thought I was crazy to leave a well paying job.
But, I chose to follow my passion to write and to move into counselling.
Living someone else’s dream may seem nice at first.
It eventually leads to feeling empty and unfulfilled.
…
Suppressing our authentic desires can manifest in various ways, including:
1. Lack of Fulfillment:
When we focus on outside expectations over our inner calling, we rob ourselves. We lose the joy and satisfaction from pursuing our passions.
2. Regret and Resentment:
Ignoring our dreams can breed resentment. We see others as responsible for steering us off course. Over time, this resentment can corrode relationships and hinder personal growth.
3. Stagnation:
Without purpose, we risk stagnating. This applies to our personal and professional lives. settling for mediocrity instead of striving for excellence.
How do we break free and embrace our dream? We must do this while still providing food, clothing and shelter for our family and ourselves.
…
Breaking Free: Embracing Your Authentic Dreams:
Breaking free from someone else’s dream is liberating. But, it is also challenging. It requires introspection, courage, and a willingness to defy societal norms.
I took these steps. You can consider them in how it can help you break free.
It wouldn’t be easy but if you stick through it to the end, it will be well worth it, seeing YOUR DREAMS become a reality!
1. Self-Reflection:
Take time to introspect and identify what ignites your passion. Reflect on your interests, values, and aspirations without the influence of external voices.
2. Courage to Embrace Change:
Embracing your real dreams often means leaving your comfort zone. It means embracing uncertainty.
Have the courage to pursue your passions, even if it means deviating from the familiar path.
3. Resilience in the Face of Adversity:
Pursuing your dreams is rarely easy.
Be prepared to encounter setbacks and criticism along the way.
Cultivate resilience and perseverance to overcome obstacles and stay true to your vision.
4. Seeking Support:
Spend time with people who share your dreams.
They will give you hope and help.
Seek mentors and peers who have walked a similar path and can offer guidance and perspective.
Living someone else’s dream hurts mental health, well-being, and life satisfaction.
The Journal of Positive Psychology published research found “that people who pursue intrinsic goals are true to their values and interests. They are happier and more fulfilled”. This is true compared to those driven by extrinsic motivations.
Psychological studies also show that autonomy is key. It fosters fulfillment and self-realization. People control their choices and actions. This makes them more likely to feel happy.
…
The world is full of pressures and expectations.
It’s easy to lose sight of our real dreams. Yet, real joy comes from our unique passions.
We find it by making our own paths.
We do so by freeing ourselves from the expectations of others.
By being brave and chasing our real dreams, we enrich our lives.
We also inspire others to do the same.
So, let go of someone else’s dream and embark on the exhilarating journey of fulfilling your own.
