Your leadership skills are crucial to your success in both business and life. But not all leaders are the same. To make sure you’re being the leader your company/team/family needs you to be, and not unknowingly steering them towards failure, make sure you’re doing the four things in this article.
#1: Chase Growth During Crisis.
This especially applies to business. Even during economic slowdowns, you MUST keep marketing, growing, and innovating. It’s what the most successful companies today did during the Great Recession of 2008, and in the depressions that came before it.
When you chase growth during crisis, you’ll be on top of the heap when the economy bounces back. So don’t be like average leaders, who become defensive and conservative when crisis strikes. Chase growth, no matter what the economic climate may be.
#2: Anticipate Your Company’s Future Shape.
Anthony Robbins once said that when you want to run a business, you’ll actually need to run two businesses: Your business as it is today, and your business as it will be a few years down the line. Doing that requires anticipation, and not all leaders have it.
If you want to be successful, you’ll need to stay ahead of the curve. Have a clear idea of what you want your business to be in a few years, and then keep growing towards it. Don’t focus too much on what’s going on now – keep your eyes on the road!
The same concept applies to raising a family well. As the head of the household, you’ll need to anticipate its needs before they actually come around. If you’ve ever fathered a child before you were ready, you’ll know how important this step is.
#3: Embrace Challenges.
Yes, businesses solve problems. But did you know they also MAKE problems?
It’s true. Any innovation, any change, any bit of expansion your business makes will create new challenges to be overcome.
It’s these new challenges that make average leaders step back in fear. Average leaders mistakenly believe that a good business should “run like a well-oiled machine.” Nope. Growth means new challenges.
If you’re a great leader, you’ll be pleased when new challenges arise to meet you – it’s a sign that your business is growing.
And lastly:
#4: Value Yourself.
As an entrepreneur, manager, team leader, or father… you’re the most important person in the team. Everyone is counting on you.
Yes, you’ll need to lead the team. It’s your job to keep morale up, give the direction, and lead the charge. But at the same time, NEVER think small about yourself.
You absolutely MUST be a strong, capable, influential leader. Don’t do what’s popular – do what’s right for your company/team/family. And part of that means valuing yourself and seeing YOU for what you need to be.
Are You a Great Leader?
Check the four items in the list above. How many of them are you NOT doing? List them down, start doing them, and keep reminding yourself to do them as you move forward. Everyone on your team needs you to.
