Thirteen years ago, two lifelong friends from Queens quietly laid the groundwork for a business plan poised to revolutionize the East Coast coffee scene forever. Now recognized as For Five Coffee Roasters, a roasting and wholesale specialty coffee venture, these entrepreneurs have left an indelible mark on the industry.
Renowned for its dazzling lights and bustling energy, Times Square has always been a hub of entertainment, offering everything from shopping to food. A few years back, the idea of finding a finely brewed cup of coffee near Times Square seemed unfathomable. However, in 2016, For Five Coffee emerged as a pioneering force, bringing specialty coffee to New York consumers and transforming Times Square into a destination for coffee connoisseurs seeking a memorable and satisfying cup of joe. Yet, the journey to tantalize the taste buds of customers was far from easy. It required years of effort and resilience to transform an idea into a $400 million coffee business. Here’s how it all began:
The Story of For Five Coffee Roasters
Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos first crossed paths in a Whitestone Queen’s classroom during third grade. After school, they embarked on entirely different journeys that eventually converged toward a shared goal: establishing a venture to make specialty coffee mainstream.
Beginning with Stefanos Vouvoudakis’s story, he entered the coffee business immediately after college. Working for a New Jersey-based roaster, he played a crucial role in supplying coffee to hospitality businesses, hotels, and diners in New York. Over nine years, he accumulated valuable industry knowledge and eventually assumed a lead sales role in the same company.
In the dominance of Starbucks and other West Coast and Philly-based players like Stumptown, Blue Bottle, and La Colombe, Vouvoudakis observed an absence of local New York roasters in this competitive space. Convinced that there was room for a homegrown, New York-based producer to introduce high-quality coffee into the luxury market, Vouvoudakis ventured to fill this gap.
Tom Tsiplakos, having gained insights into the food and beverage industry through years of working with industrial linen manufacturers, joined forces with his childhood friend and became the co-founder of For Five Coffee Roasters. His experience allowed him to establish cordial relationships with vendors and businesses in New York, proving instrumental in the coffee business.
In 2010, they actively entered New York’s specialty coffee scene, marking the beginning of their journey to bring their vision of specialty coffee to life. Since then, the duo has been working together, venturing into specialty coffee roasting and wholesale business and establishing their roasting facility in Maspeth, Queens. Initially focused on selling roasted beans to restaurants and wholesale accounts, they later expanded their footprint across various cities in the US.
The pivotal year of 2016 saw the launch of their first café in the heart of Times Square, located on West 46th Street. For Five Coffee Roasters evolved from a wholesale coffee business into a brand that creates distinctive havens for coffee enthusiasts.
Brewing Exceptional Experiences
For Five Coffee Roasters goes beyond serving lattes, espressos, pour-overs, and Americanos; each café offers a distinct menu of drinks, pastries, breakfasts, and lunches. Given the growing reliance on coffee daily, there is an increasing demand for variations and add-ons with this type of beverage. On average, an American consumer requires one or more add-ons with their coffee to customize their order.
Considering this consumer demand, For Five Coffee Roasters has curated a food menu that complements and accentuates the flavor of their high-caliber coffee variety. Combined with the minimalistic yet unique architectural elements and lively decor, their cafes provide a multisensory experience for customers throughout their day.
America’s Love for Coffee
For Five Coffee has evolved into more than just a coffee shop. Rooted in the vibrant energy of New York City, the brand has become a one-stop destination for all things coffee-related. From sourcing and cupping to roasting, importing, distributing, and even providing equipment and tech services, For Five Coffee has cultivated a comprehensive coffee haven.
After the success of their wholesale, retail, and café businesses, Stefanos and Tom have also ventured into baking with For Five Bakehouse. For Five Coffee Roasters have also invested heavily in merchandise to familiarize people with their name; they aim to make their brand a symbol of innovation and quality. Their representative states,
“Mastering the art of freshly roasted coffee has remained a driving force of For Five Coffee Roasters. Our vision is to make artisanal-grade brews and mixes accessible for everyone.”
There is always a caffeine choice for every mood. There can be multiple variations, each tasting delicious, from flavors to temperatures. For Five Coffee Roasters aims to keep this exceptional taste alive by ensuring that every cup carries the essence of their passion and expertise.
