On some of those occasions, one can do even better than a fresh start. There is an opportunity for a whole new makeover. You might not need anything quite that extreme. But for a lot of people, an opportunity to start over is just what the doctor ordered.
Going through a major illness is one such event. A protracted time of infirmity and hospitalization can reshape your body and mind. You figure out what is really important and what is not. You rededicate yourself to relationships and causes and living life to the full.
A divorce is another one of those sobering events that will force you to reevaluate everything. One or both of you is going to have to move, get new friends, start a new record collection, and put yourself out on the open market again.
But not all reinventions have to be motivated by negative events. There are also positive things that can cause you to have a new lease on life. One of them is a new job. It is more than just putting your best foot forward. Here are some of the ways you can turn a new job into a whole new you:
A New Location
You know it is time to move when you no longer look forward to the end of the workday because of your dreadful commute home. You need to be closer to the office. Sometimes, being closer to the office means moving to a new city, or a new state, or even a new country.
Allied Movers is the type of firm that has been around long enough to understand and be a part of the mobility trends in the US. These big movers know more than how to help people relocate, but why people relocate so often. That body of knowledge helps companies fit the needs of relocatees.
Based on 2013 Census data, about 20% of movers do so because of work. They are either looking for work or moving closer to work. It is the third most common reason people move.
A new location means new schools, a new neighborhood, new nightlife opportunities, and potentially more time since you will not be spending so much of it commuting. You will be taking a big step toward a new you just by relocating for work.
A New Look
It may be time to put on a business suit. If you feel like people are not taking you seriously enough, it could come down to something as simple as the wardrobe you choose for work. If you look like a teen fresh out of high school, people are going to treat you that way.
To be taken more seriously, you have to shine your shoes. More to the point, you need to be wearing the kind of shoes that can be shined. Don’t wear an open collar. Tie it up. If you are a woman who does not want to be treated like a fashion model, dress less like a fashion model and more like a business professional. Dress for the job you want, and for the way you want to be treated.
A New Enthusiasm
As hard as it is to admit to ourselves, likely the biggest problem with our old job is our old outlook. It was attitude over aptitude. There are a lot of things that can have a negative effect on our attitude including coworkers, a lack of challenge, and being passed up for greater opportunities.
A new job can fix all of those things. But at the end of the day, the only one who can determine your attitude is you. And a new job is the perfect opportunity for a much needed, and long overdue attitude adjustment. The key is to let that new-job enthusiasm propel you further than you were able to go the last time.
A new job is a great excuse to get a change of scenery, a change of clothes, and a change of perspective. There is no way to go through all that change without changing the most important thing of all, yourself.
