Most universities treat a doctorate as a luxury good. Amberton University decided to treat it as something working adults can actually afford.
Amberton University recently launched a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Counseling program. The program is the first doctoral offering in Amberton’s 55-year history. It moves a small, debt-free institution into the highest tier of academic training.
Dr. Carol A. Palmer, President of Amberton University, asked seasoned professor and Clinical Mental Health Program Director Dr. Ken Johnson to write the proposal. He agreed before he grasped the workload. “That was laborious,” Johnson said. He wrote the program proposal, the student handbook, and the project handbook himself. Faculty drafted the courses and the competencies. A committee reviewed every step. Regional Accreditor, SACSCOC has approved the program for a Fall 2026 launch.
Johnson does not downplay the difficulty. He calls a doctorate the highest level of academics a school can reach. Accrediting bodies scrutinize these programs closely. Many universities avoid the process entirely. “You can’t get any higher than a doctorate,” Johnson said.
Why Counseling Came First
Dr. Palmer made a strategic call. “Why not play up to our strengths?” Dr. Palmer asked. The decision also responds to longstanding demand, as counseling alumni and current students have consistently expressed interest in a doctoral pathway. The new program provides a clear and direct answer to that need.
A Capstone Built for Practice
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Counseling program requires 60 credit hours. Core doctoral studies account for 54 of them. The coursework targets clinical demands. Students study advanced crisis counseling, trauma techniques, and addiction treatment. Courses in psychopathology, ethics, and supervision round out the core.
The capstone breaks from tradition. Most doctorates end with a theoretical dissertation. Amberton chose a six-hour Applied Doctoral Project instead. Students solve a real problem in a professional setting. For example, their work can take the form of new curriculum, a program evaluation, or a clinical protocol.
Dr. Johnson sees this as the program’s core strength. Most Amberton students already work as practitioners. A dissertation would serve them poorly. “We’re focusing more on practice than theory, and students will love that,” he said. The project closes the gap between research and daily work.
Careers, Licensure, and Global Reach
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D. in Counseling program opens specific doors. Graduates can teach counseling at the college level. Most graduate programs require a doctorate for that work. The degree also qualifies professionals for senior administrative roles. Licensed counselors gain a clear competitive edge.
The program is non-licensure track. Students who want a Texas counseling license must complete extra requirements. Amberton University built a pathway for them. Unlicensed candidates can add specific courses to earn the credential. The doctorate then serves both teaching and clinical goals.
The fully online format has drawn attention beyond Texas. Johnson reported early inquiries from many other states.
Past outcomes support the optimism. Over 93% of Amberton alumni say their degree met its purpose. The new program aims to extend that record to the doctoral level.
How the Price Stays Low
Amberton’s tuition model sets it apart. Students will pay $625 per credit hour plus fees. A three-hour course costs $1,875.
Students also avoid large upfront bills. Amberton uses a pay-as-you-go model. Learners pay only for the courses they take each session. This structure eases the pressure on working adults. The fee schedule also lists a $250 comprehensive exam fee and a $500 project defense fee.
A Personal Approach at Scale
Amberton’s size shapes its culture. Faculty stay close to students. Dr. Johnson says this closeness defines the school. Students from other institutions often describe distant, unreachable professors. Amberton aims for the opposite. “They see us taking the journey with them,” Johnson said.
The program also stresses ethical, spiritual, and cultural awareness. Johnson frames these values as a matter of inclusion. Counselors serve clients from every background. Effective practice depends on cultural competence. The doctorate trains graduates to lead with both skill and compassion.
Amberton’s first doctorate is more than a new credential. It signals a university confident in its mission to provide a quality, relevant, technologically advanced education to adult students in a Christian environment.
