These are the high forests that sit below the shattered Alpine Peaks.
Here no broadleaf can survive the snows and bone cracking cold.
This is the domain of the mighty conifer.
They are crafted by Gaia to shed heavy snow and the fine needles protect the tree from drought and frost.
At these heights the soil water can remain frozen for months, as unavailable to the trees as in the midst of a desert.
Accompanying the conifers are many special mammals and birds, found only here amongst these scented trees.
Soon though, even these tough trees cannot grow, for above lies glacier and naked rock.
Yet even there one finds the super specialist, not merely surviving, but thriving amongst the ice and bitter screaming wind.
