Key takeaways
- DolphinRadar ranks first for a free, no-account first look at who a public account recently followed.
- IGDetective ranks second and is the pick when you want a dated record you can read back, with unfollows verified before they are shown and a free check before you pay.
- A follow shows that it happened, not why. Every tool here dates it from the day it first noticed it.
Most people who search for an Instagram follower tracker are not running a brand. They are trying to settle a question about one person: who did she follow this week, did he follow that account back, is the story in my head true. The tools can answer the first part. The second part is yours. Five trackers are compared below on what each provider states on its own site as of October 23, 2026: what is free, how a follow is dated, whether it needs your Instagram login, and the published price. Then a section on reading what you find without fooling yourself. The guide covers public accounts only; a private account’s lists are visible only to approved followers.
DolphinRadar comes first for the quickest free look. IGDetective comes second and is the one to pay for if you want a record rather than a glance.
Comparison
| Tool | Before paying | How a follow is dated | Instagram login | Unfollows | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DolphinRadar | Free search, no account | Time first found | No | In weekly reports | From $2.75 a month, annual, 1 account |
| IGDetective | Free account check | Day first seen | No | Both directions, verified | About $1 a day, US price |
| The Ick | Free preview | Time detected, hourly | No | Both directions | $9.99 a week or $34.99 a year |
| FollowSpy | Free to start | Provider says live list | No | Not stated on plans page | From $12 a week, per site |
| Snoopreport | None stated | Weekly or monthly report | No | Tracked profile’s own | From $4.99 a month, 2 accounts |
1. DolphinRadar: the free first look
DolphinRadar offers a free search on public accounts with no Instagram login and no account of its own to create first. Its help text says the time shown is when DolphinRadar first found an account, which is the honest limit every tracker has. Paid tracking is weekly reports on one account from $2.75 a month on an annual plan. If you want to look once and close the tab, it asks for the least.
2. IGDetective: the record to pay for
IGDetective starts with a free check: type a public username and it shows what can be revealed for that account before you pay anything. There is no Instagram login at any point, and the account you look up gets no notification and no view. It ranks second here only because the check wants an IGDetective account before tracking begins.
On the paid plan, each account the profile recently started following is listed with the day it was first seen, and recent followers are shown the same way. Unfollows are tracked in both directions and each is verified before it is shown. The date is a first-seen date, not a timestamp of the follow, and a new follow can take a few days to appear. Tracked accounts refresh automatically every day, you can refresh on demand, and one subscription covers up to five accounts. Plans start at about $1 a day at the US price, with monthly and weekly options and no free trial.
Limits: public accounts only. Very large lists cannot be tracked, and the free check says so before you pay.
3. The Ick
The Ick checks up to five public profiles every hour, logs new follows and unfollows in both directions with the time detected, and sends a push notification, per its site. Web app and Android app on one subscription. First analysis free, then $9.99 a week or $34.99 a year in the US. For the person who wants to know within the hour.
4. FollowSpy
FollowSpy at followspy.ai says it instantly shows who a public account recently followed and who followed it, with an anonymous Story viewer, no Instagram login. Plans page: Starter $12 a week for two accounts, Premium $14 a week unlimited, shown against struck-through prices. The instant wording is the provider’s claim.
5. Snoopreport
Snoopreport delivers weekly and monthly reports on a public account’s own follows, unfollows and likes, from $4.99 a month for two accounts, advertised as $0.99 a week. It does not list who follows the tracked account, per its site, and says a report captures up to 75 percent of public actions. The slow, cheap option.
Reading a follow honestly
- A first-seen date means the follow happened on or before that day. It is not a timestamp.
- One sighting is a lead. Two tools agreeing, or a follow plus something else, is better.
- A follow shows that it happened, not why. Instagram suggests accounts constantly, and people tap.
- An unfollow is the same. IGDetective verifies each one before showing it; a plain list comparison can mistake a deactivated account for an unfollow.
- Never give any tracker your Instagram password. A tool for public accounts has no reason to ask.
- If you are checking a partner’s account every day, the tracker is not the thing to fix. Pew notes that about half of American adults use Instagram; the follow you found is one of billions, and the conversation is still the only way to know what it meant.
Three steps
- Check the account is public. Private lists are visible only to approved followers, and no legitimate tool can show them.
- Run DolphinRadar’s free search or IGDetective’s free check.
- If you want an ongoing record, pick a plan and read it weekly, not hourly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see who someone recently followed on Instagram? On a public account, yes, with any tool here, from the day it starts tracking. Instagram itself shows no dates, and the activity tab that once showed follows was removed in 2019.
Which is free? DolphinRadar’s search is free with no account. IGDetective’s check is free and shows what can be tracked.
Will they know I looked? No. These tools never use your Instagram account.
Private accounts? No tool here reads them.
Verdict
DolphinRadar for a free look with nothing to sign up for. IGDetective for a dated record of up to five accounts, with unfollows verified before they are shown. The Ick for hourly alerts, FollowSpy for an instant list, Snoopreport for the cheapest weekly report. And whatever you find, read it as a date on a list, not a verdict.
