You did the work.
You cut the late-night snacks. You lift three times a week. Your shirts fit better across the shoulders, and people have noticed.
But pinch the sides of your waist, and the same soft roll is still there. Your love handles have outlasted every plank, every twist, and every “core finisher” you found online.
If that sounds familiar, here is the first thing to know. This often isn’t a discipline problem. It’s mostly biology, and once you see how fat leaves the body, your options make more sense.
The Myth That Keeps Men Doing Russian Twists
Search for how to get rid of love handles and you’ll find the same advice everywhere: work the sides. Side crunches, oblique twists, cable woodchops. It sounds logical, since the fat sits right on top of those muscles.
Researchers have tested the idea many times. Most studies find it doesn’t hold up.
In a 2011 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 24 inactive adults were split into two groups. One group did seven ab exercises, five days a week, for six weeks. Their abs gained endurance, but their belly fat, waist size, and body fat percentage didn’t change.
Neither did the skinfold above the hip bone, right where love handles sit.
An older study had 13 young men do sit-ups five days a week for 27 days, about 5,000 in all. Their fat cells shrank on the belly, the upper back, and the buttocks, and the belly didn’t shrink more than the other spots. Their weight, body fat, and waist measurements didn’t change.
So the twists aren’t wasted. They build the oblique muscles along your sides. They do little to decide where the fat comes off.
Why the Sides of Your Waist Hold On
Love handles aren’t muscle. They’re a layer of fat under the skin at your flanks, the area above your hips on each side. It’s the fat you can pinch.
Many men carry their extra fat around the middle. Where your body stores fat depends largely on your genes, your hormones, and your age, and those same factors seem to affect which areas slim down first. Many men find the sides of the waist slow to change, even after the scale moves.
There is a health side to this, too. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says a waist over 40 inches raises a man’s risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. To check, stand and wrap a tape around your middle, right above your hip bones, after you breathe out.
If the tape reads over 40, your first stop is your doctor.
What Moves Love Handles
Love handles respond to the same things that change your whole body. Here is where the effort pays off.
Overall Fat Loss Does Most of the Work
When you eat a little less than you burn, your body draws on fat stores across your whole body. The flanks shrink as part of that process, though often slowly. Patience is part of the plan here.
Strength Training Protects the Muscle You’ve Built
Lifting while you diet helps you hold on to muscle as the fat comes off. A 2018 review of trials in older adults with obesity found that adding resistance training to a calorie-cut diet largely prevented the loss of lean mass that dieting alone caused.
Sleep Counts More Than Most Men Think
In a small 2010 study in Annals of Internal Medicine, the same 10 adults dieted for two weeks twice. Once they had 8.5 hours in bed each night, and once they had 5.5. On short sleep, they lost about the same weight but less than half as much fat, and more of the loss was lean tissue.
Drinks Add Up Faster Than You Notice
Beer, cocktails, and sweet coffee drinks carry calories that are easy to forget by the end of the week. Cutting back is often an easy place to start.
When You’ve Done the Work and They Still Won’t Budge
Some men reach a healthy, stable weight and still have one stubborn pocket on each side. For them, there is a non-surgical option, and it helps to understand what it is and what it isn’t.
It’s called non-invasive laser lipolysis. Flat laser applicators rest on the skin and warm the fat layer underneath enough to damage some of the fat cells. There are no needles or cuts, and over the following months, the body clears the damaged cells on its own.
One device, the Venus Bliss, is FDA-cleared for non-invasive lipolysis of the abdomen and flanks in people with a BMI of 30 or less. Clinics often plan up to 3 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. Any change usually starts to show at about 6 to 8 weeks and can keep building for 3 to 6 months.
Results are modest and vary from person to person.
It also helps to know what it doesn’t do:
- It isn’t weight loss. It aims to reduce fat in one defined area. If you have more than a pocket to lose, weight loss comes first.
- It isn’t liposuction. Surgery removes more fat, faster, with anesthesia and a recovery period.
- It doesn’t replace your habits. The fat cells that remain can still grow if your weight climbs.
Most people describe the heat during a session as mild, though some find it moderately uncomfortable. Redness and mild swelling right afterward are common, and the area can stay tender for days, sometimes a few weeks.
Some people develop firm lumps under the skin that fade over weeks to months. Burns are rare but possible.
A hernia or tattoos in the treatment area, pregnancy, and some medications, including blood thinners, may rule you out. Talk to a medical provider first.
If you’re in South Florida, a consultation for non-surgical laser fat reduction in Hallandale Beach, FL, or with a physician-supervised provider near you, should start with one question: are you a candidate at all?
The Part That Isn’t About Your Waist
Many men learn to read the body as a scoreboard. A flat stomach means discipline, and a soft side means you slipped. That story can motivate you, until it starts to make you feel like a failure over something your genes largely shape.
Caring how you look isn’t vanity. It’s part of taking care of yourself, along with sleep, training, and regular checkups.
Stubborn fat is information, not a verdict.
Final Thoughts
Love handles outlast workouts because exercise does little to choose where fat leaves your body. Overall fat loss is what shrinks them. Strength training, good sleep, and fewer liquid calories help you lose fat and keep muscle.
If you’ve done all of that and one pocket stays, there’s a non-surgical option with clear limits. If your waist is over 40 inches, start with your doctor. If you’re thinking about a device, first ask whether you’re a candidate.
