When you’re watching a TED Talk or grooving at a concert, you probably don’t think about the person behind the scenes making it all happen. But that’s where Michael Clohesy thrives. This Australian-born technical producer has become the secret ingredient in some of the most unforgettable live events and broadcasts around the world.Â
And it all started in Bendigo, a small city in Australia, where a young Clohesy was fascinated by the power of media to shape culture and connect people. This childhood interest would eventually lead him on a globe-trotting adventure, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in entertainment and technology.
But before all that, Michael was just a guy with a camera and a dream. After graduating from La Trobe University with a degree in Visual Arts, he found himself facing a tough job market during the 2008 financial crisis. Instead of giving up, he got creative. He dove into Melbourne’s vibrant music scene as a journalist, reviewing concerts and interviewing artists. This gig, while seemingly unrelated to his current role, laid the groundwork for his future success.
The Big Break: From Music Critic to Tech Guru
Michael’s big break came in 2010 when he spotted an online ad asking in all caps, “WANT TO WORK IN TELEVISION?” He jumped at the chance, packed his bags, and headed to Sydney for a TV production traineeship. It was a classic “small-town boy moves to the big city” story, but with more cameras and fewer musical numbers.
Over the next decade, Michael climbed the TV industry ladder like a pro. He worked on shows like “Dancing With The Stars,” “The Project,” and “Would I Lie To You?”, learning the ropes and making a name for himself.
Just when Michael thought he’d seen it all, he landed a gig at the Sydney Opera House. Suddenly, he was the guy making sure The Cure and Wu-Tang Clan sounded and looked amazing for their anniversary shows. And if that wasn’t cool enough, he even handled the tech for Prince Harry’s speech at the Invictus Games.
But Michael isn’t one to rest on his laurels. In the middle of a global pandemic, he decided to move to Vancouver, Canada. Within six weeks, he was working as a Technical Producer for TED Talks. Now, he’s the guy making sure the world’s brightest minds look good on camera. From Elon Musk to Bill Gates, if you’ve watched a TED Talk recently and thought, “Wow, that looks great,” you can probably thank Michael for that.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Michael decided to take on a different kind of challenge in 2023 – summiting Mount Kilimanjaro. This eight-day trek pushed him to his limits, teaching him valuable lessons about patience, endurance, and the importance of celebrating small victories. It’s this kind of adventurous spirit that Michael brings to his work, always pushing boundaries and seeking new challenges.
The Clohesy Touch: Where Tech Meets Creativity
So, what makes Michael Clohesy special? It’s his knack for turning technical challenges into creative solutions. He doesn’t just do his job; he reinvents it. When the pandemic hit and everyone was scrambling to figure out virtual events, Michael was already three steps ahead, creating experiences that made you forget you were watching from your couch.
But it’s not just about the tech. He has a deep understanding of storytelling and knows how to use technology to enhance a narrative. This makes his productions more than just technical exercises – they’re immersive experiences that leave a lasting impact on the audience.
Michael has big plans for the future, both in his career and personal life. From leading groundbreaking projects in live events and TV to writing impactful stories, he’s always pushing for something new. But it’s not just about the work – Michael wants to keep exploring the world, trying new things, and helping others along the way. He’s aiming to leave a mark not just through his projects, but by inspiring others to chase their dreams too.Â
