Cosmetic procedures promise beauty enhancements, but the experience ends in disappointment for many. According to new research by The Schiller Kessler Group, up to 65% of plastic surgery patients end up regretting their decision. Citing data from the National Library of Medicine, the report reveals how common “decision regret” has become—and why it’s rising.
While regret levels vary by procedure, the emotional and physical toll is often underestimated. The study breaks down the regret rates:
- Breast Reconstruction: 47.1%
- Body Contouring (liposuction, buttock lift): 33.3%
- Breast Augmentation: 9.1% (Source: Science Direct)
The numbers show that more invasive or complex surgeries tend to bring higher dissatisfaction. But the type of procedure isn’t the only factor behind regret.
Cosmetic Surgery Abroad? Higher Risk of Regret
The research also explores the rising trend of traveling abroad for cheaper surgery. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, 57% of overseas patients spent less than $5,700 total, including surgery, travel, and accommodation. Yet 66% said they wouldn’t make the same decision again. Cheaper doesn’t always mean better, especially when safety, expertise, and aftercare are compromised.
Why So Much Regret?
The most common causes of plastic surgery regret are diverse and deeply personal. The data highlights these top factors (Source: iCliniq 2023):
- Unmet expectations – 33%
- Complications (infections, scarring, asymmetry) – 24%
- Inadequate information pre-surgery – 17%
- Loss of confidence or emotional discomfort – 13%
- Debt or wasted money perception – 8%
Other complaints include post-operative pain, lengthy recovery, and visible scarring. For many, the end result doesn’t match the emotional and financial investment.
“Deciding on plastic surgery is a huge step, and too often, the results are disappointing,” says Marc Schiller of The Schiller Kessler Group. “Better understanding and preparation before paying for a procedure would help diminish the amount of regret.”
Know Your Rights
Those who’ve experienced severe complications after cosmetic procedures may be entitled to legal support. The Schiller Kessler Group encourages individuals to get in touch if they’ve suffered harm due to a surgery gone wrong.
Cosmetic enhancements can be life-changing, but only when done with full awareness of the risks. This new research is a reminder to always research thoroughly, manage expectations, and consult trusted professionals before making such a permanent choice.
