Men who shirk their duties as fathers to their children is one of the most unfortunate social crises in America today. Whether through divorce, because they themselves were fatherless, and/or apathy; a lot of men have lost their connection to meaningful fatherhood. If you are looking for ways to reverse your own not-so-great fathering moments, these tips should help you forge a stronger bond with your children.
The One Thing You Can Do To Be A Super Hero
Most dads want their kids to think of them as super heroes. It’s not necessarily a bad thought unless it leads you or your children to have unrealistic expectations. However, there is one way all dads can be super heroes: Show up. Show up as a parent. Show up in their lives. Show up for their mother whether you are still married to her or not. Stop worrying about leaping tall buildings! Just be there for them no matter what else is going on. Put aside work or petty differences with their mom or anything else which is inhibiting you from being a presence in their life. It is the thing all children want most from their fathers.
As A Father You Matter
All children grow up, but the ones who have active fathers grow up with fewer social and emotional problems. Statistics have shown fathers who remain a part of their children’s lives grow up to be more well-adjusted than their peers who did not have fatherly involvement. If for no other reason than to keep your child from falling victim to fatherlessness, do whatever is necessary to be a part of their lives. Here are some ways to make sure your children know you are there for them:
- Talk to them: No matter if you are in the home or not make sure you talk to your children regularly.
- Provide for them: Let your kids see you take care of them. Let your kids see you meet their needs. If you or they need help, get it.
- Think in terms of legacy: Approaching fatherhood with thoughts of, “How will they remember me?” is a good way to put your best self out there.
- Teach them: Whatever you are interested in, teach your children. They do not need to get interested too but showing them what makes their dad tick helps create a deep bond.
- Be an example: Show them what makes a real hero. Heroes do their best for others. Also be willing to make mistakes and correct yourself with sincerity.
If you are a father, ask yourself what sort of father you want to be for your children. No matter how old your children are it is never too late to show up in their lives. If you have been absent, they may resist. But can you really blame them? Show them you are serious about being a part of their lives and with time, your relationships will grow.
