Father’s Day is a great opportunity to treat your dad a good, trusty knife. A knife is one of the most versatile gifts for a dad, with its uses ranging from cutting steak to hunting and cutting wood. There are also a wide variety of knives that can align well with your dad’s hobbies and preferences.
Choose the Right Material
One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a knife is its type of steel. 1075/1095 Spring Steel (Rockwell Hardness 42-52) is affordable, available in thin gauges and suitable for many applications. 8670 Carbon Alloy is a durable option, ideal for situations where a higher Rockwell Hardness than spring steel is necessary. The carbon alloy D-2 Tool Steel, most often used in a heat-treated state, is suitable for higher hardness and offers resistance to abrasion and corrosion. D-2 has a higher ratio of elements like vanadium and Chromium that resist corrosion.
Another option is M-2 HSS High-Speed Steel, which features high abrasion resistance due to its Tungsten and Vanadium elements. Lastly, the versatile CPM 10V powder metal tool steel touts extreme strength and high impact toughness, thanks to substantial hard vanadium carbides, fine grain size, cleanliness and small carbides of the powder metallurgy microstructure. CPM 10v has better wear resistance than D2 and other high-carbon, high-chromium steels.
Consider Various Types of Knives
Whatever your dad enjoys doing, there may be ways that a great knife can make that hobby more fulfilling. If your dad loves cooking, consider an 8″ chef’s knife, which will help him slice and dice with ease. A boning or fillet knife, which features a curved blade made from flexible steel, is also useful for both cooking and eating, especially for unlikely shapes like chicken joints and whole fish. Sometimes there are juicy pieces of a steak that a normal knife can’t reach. This type of situation is where a new knife can save the meal.
Perhaps your dad is more of the arts and crafts type. If so, consider a new pocket knife or a multitool. A medium-sized multi-tool can provide openers, scissors, screwdrivers, saws and more in a small package. For someone into crafts or exploration, a multitool knife can be very useful. Being able to cut and stylize at will with a knife that can easily fit into your pocket makes the creative process more seamless.
Additionally, you can consider a craft knife set, which features thin and flexible blades that help with precise and accurate cuts. These knives can also peel off adhesives and labels with ease. A rotary cutter is also worth consideration, essentially serving as cutters for paper, fabric and other materials. If your dad enjoys making or repairing his clothing, a rotary cutter is a must.
The Para-Claw knife is another interesting option, ideal if your dad enjoys hiking. You never know what you may encounter in the wilderness while hiking, so the Para-Claw knife provides excellent self-defense by providing the user with an easily accessible knife they can wear on their wrist. In case of an animal attack, the knife can easily come out of its nylon guard.
Many knife manufacturers also offer customization of the knife’s colors and labeling. You can add your dad’s name to the knife for an extra personal touch, or inscribe a special message. With purchasing a knife for Father’s Day, there an abundance of options that can fit any dad. Whether your dad loves culinary excellence and would benefit from a chef’s knife, or is a frequent hiker who may need a Para-claw knife for self-defense, there’s likely a knife out there that will improve your dad’s life. A knife can be the perfect Father’s Day gift.
