
You’ll never truly be in control of your life until you learn to balance your emotions!
In this read, I’m breaking down exactly how to master your emotions — and why it matters.
What is Emotional Mastery?
Just to be clear, mastering emotions doesn’t mean shutting them down or becoming emotionless.
In fact, it’s totally opposite. Emotional mastery is about acknowledging, feeling and accepting those emotions while understanding their role in your life.
Without it, you’ll always remain a slave to your emotions, reacting instead responding.
Your triggers will dictate your actions, and you’ll constantly feel out of control.
Step1️⃣: SELF-AWARENESS
One of the most important and powerful things you really need to master your emotions is *SELF-AWARENESS*.
Think about it — if you don’t understand your own feelings, your own thoughts, your own behavior; how can you ever level up your life?
Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence.
Yet, unfortunately, unconsciously most of us live life on auto-pilot, controlled by emotions.
We get caught up over-indulge in the everyday hustle-bustle of life, loosing connections with ourselves.
I’ve been there too. On the peripheral, everything seemed fine, but deep inside, I felt something was off.
The one thing that worked with me?
I started to *take a step back* and *consciously question* everything.
- Why am I feeling this way?
- Why did I just react like that?
- Why am I drowning in my emotions?
- Why that traumatic past event is still impacting me till today?
- What’s triggering me right now?
Just be the curious observer of your life. No judgment. No criticism. Just awareness.
Step️2️⃣: SELF-REGULATION
Secondly, people who snaps or lash out over small things are usually disconnected from their emotions.
They keep pushing that inner world under the rug, so hard that one day it’s just build up to the level that its unmanageable and they ultimately explode — being controlled by it.
When it comes to *SELF-REGULATION*, you must first honor those emotions instead of suppressing them.
Remember: Emotions are your subconscious mind’s way of communicating with you.
Emotions are neither Irrational nor Weaknesses.
If you’re being ignorant towards your emotions, you’re just ignoring the messages from yourself.
Self-regulation is not about suppressing emotions — it’s about managing when and how you process them.
As you don’t want to break down at an inappropriate moment, but you also can’t keep bottling things up.
The key? Find healthy outlets to process your emotions.
Crying, brisk walking, hitting to the gym, cold water shower, maybe sometimes dark-chocolates or ice-cream or any other guilty pleasure.
This is how you take ownership of your emotions by accept yourself.
Step️3️⃣️: SELF-TALK
As crucial as it is to feel your emotion, there is a limit that you don’t want to to cross.
And this limit can only be set by YOU!
There is a difference between knowing your feeling and just wallowing in self-pity and victimizing the situation by recreating it.
The difference?
- Well according to me, when you need to process an emotion, you’ll feel it in your body — heaviness in your chest, or hot sensations in your cheeks.
- Whereas when you’re wallowing, you’re keeping yourself mentally stuck in the past, replaying the situation over and over.
At that point, you’re not feeling your emotions anymore — you’re thinking them.
Your conscious self-talk can pull you out of the cycle.
So ask yourself:
- Is this thought helping or hurting me?
- What’s another way I can view this situation?
- What can I learn from this?
Your mind is your most powerful tool — use it wisely.
