Sometimes we get so caught up in saying, “I’m never abandoning myself again,” that we don’t realise – we already have.
You don’t feel neglected just because you’re dramatic. You feel abandoned because… you are. Whether it happened slowly over time, or your partner left you emotionally long ago – or whether you started doing it to yourself – at some point, you’ve been left to fend for yourself in a space where you were meant to be held, seen, protected.
And once you’re there, it’s hard to notice it for what it is.
You just know something feels off. So let’s name it. Let’s call a spade a spade.
Here are 3 signs you’ve abandoned yourself in a relationship – even if you didn’t mean to:
1. You keep the peace at the cost of your truth
You don’t speak up when you’re hurt. You downplay your needs. You walk on eggshells, and call it “understanding.”
You convince yourself it’s not worth another argument, that maybe you’re just too sensitive. But the truth is, you’re silencing yourself to survive something you’re not meant to be surviving. And over time, you start to lose yourself – piece by quiet piece.
2. You keep running to others to validate what you already know
You constantly need someone to say, “That’s not okay,” or “You deserve better,” because deep down, you don’t trust yourself to believe it.
It starts small, just a phone call here, a message there. Then it becomes a pattern. You explain the same story to five different people, hoping one of them gives you permission to leave, to stay, to breathe. You know what’s happening. But it feels safer to hear it from someone else.
You’re not just looking for support – you’re looking for someone to save you from making the hard call yourself.
3. You start thinking their carelessness must mean you’re asking for too much.
They show up late. They don’t call back. They ignore your boundaries. And instead of getting angry, you get smaller. You start making excuses. “They’re just busy,” “I don’t want to nag,” “Maybe I should be more chill.”
You abandon the version of you that knows you deserve more. You shrink until they don’t feel guilty being careless – and you start to believe that maybe this is what love looks like for people like you.
It’s not.
Even after reading this, you might still go back. You might still keep quiet or reach out to someone else just to check if your pain is valid.
Because that’s what happens when you’re in the loop. That’s what self-abandonment feels like – a cycle. And breaking it is hard. Even when you’ve done it once, it’s easy to slip back in. I almost did!
I thought I’d broken free. But the pattern tried to pull me back to the same charm, same apologies, same chemistry. The only difference was… this time I saw it. I knew what was happening. I didn’t need someone to tell me anymore.
It wasn’t just emotional either. A health scare made it all crystal clear. This man. the one I had once trusted. Wasn’t willing to get a sexual health test. He put the responsibility on the women (yuck, I couldn’t believe it. He wasn’t willing to do the bare minimum to protect me. And I realised: I was literally risking my health for someone who didn’t care enough or at all to understand the danger he was putting me in. He is a danger not only to me but himself.
That was the moment I finally said, “enough is enough.”
Self-abandonment isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it looks like silence. Sometimes, it looks like staying. But if you’re feeling confused, lonely, or lost in a relationship of any kind – don’t ignore it.
You deserve to feel safe, heard, and held. You deserve to come home to yourself. We all do. Its a basic human right and need.
You’re not crazy. You’re not needy. You’re not asking for too much.
If this resonated with you feel free to leave a comment.
