My friend Patricia is a victim of this new dating trend “roaching”. When Patricia met Gerald, it seemed like they were a match made in heaven.
However, Gerald quickly started showing his true colors by roaching.
Roaching has become increasingly common in recent years, as more and more people adopt the “hook-up” culture and focus on casual dating rather than finding a serious relationship.
Roaching reflects a deep disrespect for both oneself and one’s partner, as well as a lack of commitment to meaningful connections.
Gerald despite being in a relationship with Patricia continued dating other women behind her back. That is roaching.
People sometimes call it cheating but there is a slight difference to show how dirty this act is — roaching. To roach is not to cheat, per se, but to be purposefully opaque about having other lovers at a time when someone is dating another exclusively.

What is Roaching?
Roaching is a dating trend that has recently gained popularity among young people.
This trend involves intentionally trying to keep one’s dating history ambiguous and hidden from their current partner, often by casually mentioning encountering an ex at some point or another.
Roaching is seen as highly problematic because it promotes dishonesty in dating and relationships, reduces trust between partners, and can lead to feelings of insecurity and jealousy.

Where Did The Term “Roaching” Originate From?
The term “roaching” originated from the analogy that cockroaches (more commonly referred to as roaches) proliferate when you don’t have good sanitation.
Similarly, this dating trend multiplies when people are afraid of commitment.
Roaching is often perpetuated by individuals who have been hurt in the past and are afraid to get emotionally attached to someone again.
Roaching can be extremely painful for the victim, who often feels betrayed and used.
Roaching is a form of emotional manipulation, as the roacher often gaslights their victim into thinking that they are the only one who is upset by the situation.
Roaching is a self-serving act that does nothing but cause pain and heartache. It’s time to put an end to this disgusting trend.

Why Do People Roach?
So why do people do it?
Roachers typically justify their actions by saying that they are just trying to have fun and don’t want to be tied down.
But the truth is, roaching is nothing more than a cowardly way to avoid real intimacy.
If you are afraid of commitment or simply don’t care about your partner’s feelings, then you shouldn’t be dating in the first place.

Here are 7 Strong Reasons Society Should Condemn The Dating Trend “Roaching”
There are several reasons why society should strongly condemn roaching. Here are 7 of them;
1. Roaching is dishonest and promotes dishonesty in dating and relationships.
When people engage in reaching are, they intentionally hiding information from their partner that could potentially be damaging to the relationship.
This lack of transparency can breed mistrust between partners and make it difficult to build a foundation of trust.
Thus, roaching is highly problematic because it promotes dishonesty in dating and relationships.
Roaching creates an atmosphere of mistrust and can lead to feelings of insecurity, jealousy, and contempt.
According to love and relationships expert Dr Emma, honesty is important in relationships because it helps build trust, which is the foundation of any healthy relationship.
She states that “without trust, it’s very difficult to feel safe and secure in a relationship, which can lead to all sorts of problems.”
Thus, roaching is highly problematic because it goes against one of the key foundations of a healthy relationship. Roachers also have a tendency of gaslighting their partners:

2. Roaching can be harmful to one’s physical and mental health.
But aside from being immoral, roaching can also be extremely harmful to one’s physical and mental health.
Studies have shown that people who engage in hook-up culture are at higher risk of depression, anxiety, STDs, unwanted pregnancies, and other negative consequences.
Roaching only exacerbates these risks, as it often leads to even more broken hearts and feelings of betrayal.
According to Dr Jane, a leading expert on mental health, “when we see people engaging in roaching or other forms of hook-up culture, it is often an indicator that they are also struggling with feelings of loneliness and disconnection.”
Thus, by promoting dishonesty and hook-up culture, roaching can be extremely harmful to one’s physical and mental health.
Society should strongly condemn roaching in order to protect people’s physical and mental health.

3. Roaching can also lead to physical and emotional abuse
In addition to the negative psychological effects of roaching, it can also contribute to the development of physical and emotional abuse.
By lying and distorting the truth, people who engage in roaching are often able to control their partners and maintain power over them. This can cause them to feel trapped, isolated, and vulnerable — all potential risk factors for abusive behavior.
Furthermore, by setting a bad example of dishonesty in relationships, roaching may encourage other unhealthy behaviors such as manipulation or violence.
In order to prevent these harmful outcomes, society must take action against roaching by actively discouraging this unethical behavior.

It leaves the victimized partner feeling as though they are not trust worthy or valued which can be damaging to any relationship.

Roaching is often used as a way to manipulate and control partners. People who engage in roaching typically do so in order to keep their partners from leaving them.
By hidings aspects of their life from their partner, they are able to maintain a sense of control and prevent them from having the information they need to leave.
This can be very dangerous, as it often leads to feelings of betrayal and resentment.
According to Dr Susan, a leading psychologist specializing in relationships, “roaching is something that should never be tolerated in any relationship. It creates an unhealthy dynamic between partners and can cause lasting damage.”
Thus, roaching should not only be condemned by society, but also actively discouraged with awareness campaigns and other measures.

Roaching is unethical in many ways, as it goes against the basic principles of honesty and trust that are at the core of any healthy relationship.
Not only does roaching harm the person who is being lied to, but it also sets a negative example for others. It signals to other people that lying and manipulation are acceptable behaviors in dating and relationships, which can ultimately have a damaging impact on society as a whole.
According to leading psychologist Dr Jessica, “roaching undermines our most basic values as a society — namely honesty, integrity, and respect. As such, it should be strongly condemned by all members of our community.”
Thus, it is clear that roaching has serious negative consequences, and should be strongly discouraged in order to set a better example for others.

7. Roaching can have long-term negative consequences
While the short-term effects of roaching might not seem like a big deal, the long-term effects can be much more damaging.
Roaching often leads to feelings of betrayal and resentment, which can damage relationships and lead to lasting trust issues. It can also cause people to develop anxiety and depression, as well as other mental health problems.
What’s more, roaching sets a bad example for others and can contribute to the development of a hook-up culture that promotes dishonesty and manipulation.

However, roaching is a harmful and unethical behavior that can have serious consequences for both the individuals involved in relationships as well as society at large.

Final Thoughts
Roaching is a self-serving act that does nothing but hurt the people involved. If you know someone who’s being reached, stand up for them and help them end the cycle of pain. And if you’re tempted to roach yourself, think twice about the type of person you want to be.
Commitment is scary, but it’s always better than being a coward.
Overall, roaching is a highly problematic behavior that goes against the key foundations of healthy dating and relationships — honesty, trust, and communication. It has harmful effects on physical and mental health, and reduces trust between partners.
In addition to undermining trust and honesty in relationships, roaching can cause feelings of betrayal, resentment, anxiety, depression, abuse, and more.
Thus, it is clear that we must take action against roaching in order to protect our relationships and prevent harmful outcomes. We should discourage this unethical behavior through awareness campaigns and other measures in order to safeguard our mental health and promote healthy relationships.

I’m still not clear what actual ‘roaching’ is. Yes, I understand that dishonestly can undermine if not shred trust, but exactly what is roaching. Lying about previous relationships??? When describing a behavior it would be helpful to provide examples and even a few actual accounts. Mentioning the impact is okay, but please define behavior. Otherwise how can anyone recognize it. Thanks.
We’ve updated the post to include the definition.
