Here is why I believe in The Good Men Project:
When I was living in the US, I found social activism and awareness frustrating. I had traveled around the country looking for ways to change for the better. This search lead me to discover a lack of relevant models for men within these movements. Men generally got type-cast in traditional roles, and then would be called out for playing those roles. I decided that since I couldn’t find any relevant models in my culture, I needed to seek them out in other cultures.
So I hit the road again to visit the globe. China, Malaysia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Mexico, Guatemala. I called each of these countries my home while I lived and worked as a teacher. Since that time, I have learned of vastly different shared roles for men inside global cultures. My work in education has helped me spread this variety of possibility and enter into conversations about these vital topics with students from a broad range of cultural experiences. Yet still I felt frustrated and dissatisfied, my reach was too immediate, positive growth of a large scale seemed a distant dream of future dreamers.
The society around me needed a rethink, a way to face the major issues that reach around the world. The big questions of our day—social justice, environment, crime and punishment, media manipulation, and male roles in these concerns—if these interconnected problems were going to be solved, they needed to be questioned. In order to question them, a way to communicate the collective experience of men around the world would be necessary.
Then along came The Good Men Project, and an offer to communicate with a much larger demographic. They have provided me with access to a global community to help men grow new roles within society, and this growth is targeted back to my home culture. The awareness I tried to cultivate in my years of frustration is now an obtainable goal.
The Good Men Project is showcasing to our global community a wider palate of the evolving social roles for men. With The Good Men Project you have the ability and chance to actually do something about issues that are critical.
