I am a dad of two energetic boys. After working in Purchasing for 15 years, I was ready for a new career at the time we were expecting our first son.
Although I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into, I have found being the primary caregiver to be the most challenging and rewarding experience I have ever had. Since then, our second son has added even more joy to our family, and I have become more dedicated to being a father every day.
In my spare time, I enjoy music, going to concerts and reading. Although I miss playing guitar for hours at a time, the opportunity to spend this time with our children is something that I’m extremely grateful for. I’ve never been more exhausted, but after seven years, I still can’t imagine being anywhere else!
Quote.
Patience takes too long. – My son Kingsley at four years old.
What I do well as a dad.
I love playing with my kids. It’s great to see them using their imaginations when we role-play as their favorite superheroes battling me who always seems to be the villain. And then there is the tussling of course. I’ve also become pretty good at repairing things that my kids break!
What I learned from another dad.
To listen and be mindful of a child’s feelings and emotions, especially when he/she is willing to open up to you.
Lesson learned from my child.
How to live in the moment and enjoy the magical, funny and silly moments my boys create during the time I spend with them.
Successful fatherhood moment.
While my oldest son was at the playground, he failed at his attempt to mingle with the group of kids. He returned to me and expressed his frustration. I offered him some suggestions.
He returned to the group and gave it another try. After the group of kids embraced him, he looked and smiled at me and gave me the thumbs up.
Dad I admire.
Austin Dowd. While setting an example as an at-home dad, he has also established a network in our community that provides support, inspiration, learning, and fun for our local dads. He is a friend to all.
