Model and Actor Will Wilmore Shows His Kids Dads Cook Too
–
On July 19, 1910 Father’s Day the governor of Washington proclaimed the first Father’s Day. It didn’t pick up the momentum at first that they wanted because fathers weren’t held in the same regard as mothers. Even men felt it was wishy washy as they tried to maintain the old school mindset of what masculinity was supposed to be. In 1972 Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law as a federal holiday.
As we look at the idea of fatherhood in 2015, many wonder what that means with the picture of what was once considered the “traditional” family looking much different than before. A lot of homes are headed by single parents (mostly moms) and dads spend visitation time with their kids. With the shared parenting movement supported by organizations nationwide including those like committee proposing a White House Council for Boys and Men, that is changing rapidly but it still has a long way to go.
Unfortunately, many dads still aren’t seen as the primary caregiver even when they do have shared parenting time. It’s certainly not always because they don’t want to be, however, but to be honest parental direction that would teach our boys that they can be 100% fully committed, engaged parents hasn’t caught up to the change as well as it should. As a result, many dads are still uninvolved leaving kids fatherless and with some who are involved they are trying to catch up to those who have had the opportunity to know how it’s really done.
Our Dad’s Cookin’ with Kids column aims to help dads change that dynamic by offering recipes and cooking tips from Dads to promote bonding in the kitchen as we know quality time is what matters most to kids. So to all the dads out there celebrating Father’s Day this year we salute you and wish you the best day ever!
Much like the fathers in our past articles model, singer, actor Will Wilmore a new but very committed dad knows what it means to put love into your food. Will, his two children and his wife spend as much quality time as they can together in their home state of Delaware, bonding when he’s not on the road acting, modeling or singing. He believes that when it comes to the dynamic of dads and kids, they really need to know that you’ll simply “be there.” Will says “spending time with my son allows him to see it’s ok to have these qualities and still be a strong man.” When I asked Will what his specialty was he said he couldn’t give me all of the secrets to his fabulous mealtime favorite but hey, you guys are super smart and I know you can take this meal and make your own!” So here’s how Will makes his family feel special when he cooks:
