Destin Gerek, an internationally recognized leading voice in masculinity, sexuality, consciousness, and personal empowerment, interviews survivor and former domestic violence attorney Nanine McCool about her encounter with Tony Robbins. On March 15, 2018, McCool was attending a Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within (UPW) event in San Jose, CA. According to a VICE article, Robbins was critical of the #MeToo movement saying, “If you use the #MeToo movement to try to get significance and certainty by attacking and destroying someone else… all you’ve done is basically use a drug called significance to make yourself feel good.” Nanine McCool found herself yelling, ‘You’ve got it all wrong!’” What followed was a confrontation with Robbins himself, which McCool details in her interview with Gerek.
During the interview, Gerek stresses he is not here “to take down” Robbins but believes this is an opportunity for Robbins to step up, listen, and make amends. McCool recounts what happened before the encounter with Robbins took place and why she chose to speak out after his criticism. She specifies what happened, including a “physical resistance” exercise. Then, she speaks lucidly of her own background as a survivor and how that played a role in her response.
Furthermore, McCool describes some of her own experiences of sexism as well as her work as a domestic violence attorney prior to disbarment. When Gerek asks her if she has any words for Robbins, her main focus is on women speaking their truth and a desire for Robbins to apologize to those who felt betrayed by his words about the #MeToo movement.
