ICE Is Committing Crimes Against Humanity With Our Tax Dollars

This is nothing new, but that doesn’t mean the shock, horror, and rage doesn’t still burn us up inside.

W — yesterday, thanks to the courage and patriotism of a Black woman, Dawn Wooter, we learned of the horrific allegations of mass hysterectomies being performed at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Ocilla, Georgia.

This detention center is being run by La Salle Corrections, a private company that operates similar facilities in three Southern states.

Let us be crystal clear: this is a staggering abuse of human rights. The racially-targeted destruction of women’s reproductive systems is nothing less than attempted genocide.

The BREATHE Act offers a clear cut solution and path towards completely dismantling ICE. W, abolishing ICE isn’t just a protest chant or a high-minded policy ideal — it is a REQUIREMENT for our communities.

Thanks to the whistle blowing nurse and her courage to stand by her ideals, we’ve received chilling reports from the ICE camps:

NPR MASTHEAD ‘When I met all these women who had had surgeries, I thought this was like an experimental concentration camp ‘ the woman told Project South. ‘It was like they’re experimenting with our bodies ‘ Wooten said in the complaint that one particular gynecologist, whom she called ‘the uterus collector’ performs the procedure. ‘Everybody he sees, he’s taking all their uteruses out or he’s taken their tubes out’
These deeply disturbing allegations echo the worst moments of our nation’s history. When the Hippocratic Oath demands that medical professionals swear to, “First, do no harm” — why does that solemn vow not apply to Black and Brown women?

We must close the camps. Lives are at stake. The bodily autonomy of Black and Brown women can no longer be a pawn in white supremacist warfare. We need to BREATHE.

We need to bring 100,000 community co-sponsors to Capitol Hill to show Congressional leaders that the BREATHE Act is an urgent necessity.
