The Trump administration’s decision to halt all offshore wind projects, on national security grounds, is a deliberate act of economic and technological self-sabotage. At a time when the demand for electricity is growing exponentially, driven by the electrification of the economy and the AI revolution, abandoning one of the cheapest, most competitive and reliable sources of energy that exist is reckless.
The Interior Department has ordered that work on Vineyard Wind 1, Revolution Wind, Sunrise Wind, Empire Wind and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind be halted, saying they could interfere with military radar systems. This despite having gone through extensive security reviews, including evaluations by the Department of Defense.
Other countries with offshore wind projects have been able to mitigate such problems: the UK has refitted defense systems to offshore wind farms. Trump’s decision to curb innovation instead of adapting technology is not based on science or safety concerns, but on a long-standing ideological opposition to clean energy.
But the reality is that renewables, including offshore wind, are now some of the cheapest sources of energy available in terms of levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). and their costs are projected to continue to fall with technological improvements and economies of scale. At a time when growing electricity demand, from data centers to transportation electrification, requires expanding capacity quickly and at the lowest possible costs, closing the door to many gigawatts of newly built clean energy is perverse in the extreme.
In addition, the decision has triggered a wave of financial uncertainty that has damaged the companies that invested billions of dollars in these projects. This will discourage further private investment and put the United States at a disadvantage against global competitors who are moving ahead with their energy transition.
The decision reflects traditional Republican thinking, with Trump calling wind turbines “ugly monsters” and renewables “inefficient”. He couldn’t be more wrong. The reality is that his policies will raise electricity costs, expose the economy to the volatility of fossil fuels, and put industrial competitiveness at risk. Ignoring decades of economic evidence and decarbonization to cling to a narrow and anachronistic vision is willful stupidity.
Furthermore, halting these renewables projects will destroy jobs, stymie private investment, hit coastal communities that had new economic activity, and consumers will end up paying more for energy. Paralyzing the energy transition at this time is a strategic failure that delivers geopolitical advantages to technological and energy rivals, while the United States gives up one of the most successful energy resources of our time.
The only way to describe this is strategic stupidity. It is not based on a rigorous cost-benefit analysis or consolidated technical evidence, and instead on the ideological prejudice and ignorance of a short-sighted idiot. The United States is turning its back on a cheap, plentiful source of energy. And it does so on the grounds of “national security”, while in reality leaving the country more insecure than ever.
