Cruz is facing a tough challenge from Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who represents El Paso in Congress. Cruz openly concedes that O’Rourke could well replace him in Washington, telling a crowd in Smithville that polls are too close to make predictions favoring either candidate. Social media tells a different story, however. On Twitter, O’Rourke is the favorite to win by a huge margin. Cruz gets 36 percent positive opinions, while Beto creams him with 67 percent. Despite calling the race still up in the air, Cruz seems keenly aware that the O’Rourke threat is real. “The far left is filled with anger and rage, and we underestimate that anger at our peril,” Cruz said at a Republican women’s event on Saturday. But one caveat about those Twitter results: They include users outside of Texas, meaning the approval ratings for Cruz could be significantly higher within the Lone Star State. He may want to rethink any 2020 bid, though. –Hugo Guzman
