This might sound like a bold thing to say, but I really don’t believe unrequited love is a real thing.

Yes, maybe you love someone and they don’t love you back. That happens. It’s human. It hurts. But the moment we name it “unrequited love,” we wrap that ache in something poetic, something tragic, something romantic — when maybe it’s not romantic at all.

Maybe it’s just… rejection.

But rejection doesn’t sit comfortably with us. It never has. So we do what we do best: turn it into a story. A beautiful, aching, tragic story. One where you love someone so deeply, so selflessly, so purely… and they just can’t see it. It feels noble. Like proof of your heart.

But let’s pause right there.

Because real love, the grounded kind — not the one with fireworks and fantasies — requires knowing someone. Deeply. Honestly. Not just how they make you feel, but who they actually are. The messy bits. The parts that don’t reciprocate. The part that pulls away. That says “no.” That chooses something else.

And here’s the truth, so much of what we call “unrequited love” isn’t love at all.

It’s projection. It’s attachment. It’s the story we build in our heads to avoid sitting in the hard truth: they don’t want us. They didn’t choose us. And that must mean something about us, right?

Wrong.

Sometimes people don’t choose you because they just don’t. Not because you’re not good enough. Not because you’re lacking anything. Not because they’re broken or you’re broken or you were supposed to fix them. Sometimes it’s just no.

And that’s okay.

Because if it’s not mutual, it’s not love. It’s hope wrapped in memory. It’s potential dressed up as passion. It’s a conversation that only ever happened in your own mind. That’s not love. That’s longing.

You can’t love someone you’ve never really known. You can’t love someone who never let you in.

And the hardest truth? If you’re still chasing someone who clearly doesn’t want to be with you, maybe the love you’re missing isn’t theirs — it’s your own. That quiet, steady, unconditional love you’re supposed to give yourself first. The kind that doesn’t require earning. Or convincing. Or waiting.

The people meant for you won’t need persuasion.

They’ll come as ease. As quiet understanding. As peace, not performance.

So if you’re stuck in that loop — the waiting, the overthinking, the obsessing — the most radical thing you can do is stop. Not with bitterness. Not with resentment. But with grace.

Whisper thank you.
Thank you for showing me where my energy no longer belongs.
Thank you for making it clear.
Thank you for not pretending.

And then… choose yourself. Not just in words, but in action.

Because the most powerful love story you’ll ever live isn’t about who you chase.

It’s about who you come home to when the chasing ends.
