In an era where commercial theater plays it stiflingly safe, Crawl Space Plays has dropped a pipe bomb of pure, unadulterated artistic defiance into the subterranean dark.
Their world premiere adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s Les Enfants Terribles at the East Village Basement isn’t just a production—it is a vital, heart-stopping reminder of why radical indie theater matters.
The Atmospheric Design & Hyper-Proximity: Building the Fortress

Spatial Exploration:
Elisabeth (Mayise Jane): Jane stalks the perimeter like an absolute monarch surveying a battlefield, scaling furniture and leaning against structural pillars to look down on both her brother and the audience.
Paul (Rutger Scott): Scott explores the space through a lens of frantic agoraphobia, nesting beneath piles of frayed linens or pacing like a caged animal against the raw brick walls.
Agatha (Caroline (Lina) DeFasio) DeFasio moves with the hesitant cadence of a trespasser, subtly weaving between audience seats while shrinking away from the siblings’ chaotic orbits.
Gerard (Victor Gao): Gao acts as the production’s spatial anchor, occupying the thresholds near the venue’s exit stairs to structurally represent a physical bridge back to reality.

Outstanding Technical support team:
Hannah Kunce (Intimacy Director) Safely choreographed vulnerable moments and complex psychological boundaries for the “sexy, verboten, and wrong” sibling dynamics, maintaining raw tension. Kunce is a prominent New York-based intimacy director specializing in off-Broadway and independent premieres.
Bethany Qian (Production Stage Manager) Flawlessly executed the technical calling for a rapid-fire, 100-minute, no-intermission run, seamlessly synchronizing the layers of reality and fantasy. Qian is a highly regarded NYC stage manager specializing in high-concept, intimate off-Broadway runs and basement venues.
Patrice Miller (Dance Advisor) Crafted a dreamlike physical vocabulary reflecting Cocteau’s concept of “mythomania”—living inside one’s own fabricated myths. Miller is a versatile, multidisciplinary NYC director and choreographer whose experimental work has been staged at La MaMa E.T.C., The Brooklyn Museum, HERE Arts Center, and The Brick Theater.
Giori Del Filippone (Fight Choreographer): Structured frantic, erratic altercations that captured the narrative’s childhood cruelty and sudden physical persecution while ensuring maximum safety. Del Filippone is an NYC action designer specializing in high-stakes realism for intimate black boxes and site-specific spaces.

By seamlessly fusing historical trauma with a sharp, distinctly 2026 sense of doom, Gardner delivers a masterclass in modern indie staging, curating an all-encompassing psychological trap that solidifies his status as one of Off-Broadway’s most thrillingly daring visionaries.
Director Michael Gardner
masterfully manipulates physical constraints into psychological warfare, orchestrating the pacing with agonizing precision.
He refuses to romanticize Cocteau’s tragic figures, instead highlighting their jagged realities and pushing his actors to embrace raw vulnerability.
