We started The Good Men Project seven years ago. Right from the get-go, the mission was to “spark an international conversation about the changing roles of men in the 21st century.” One of the key pieces of that phrase was the world “conversation”.
Over the years, we’ve experimented a lot with what a “conversation” looks like. For example, when we started, we didn’t have a media company; we had a book of men’s stories, and those stories grew into a series of live events to promote the book, and a film, and a then a blog, and finally a media company.
As a media company, we had the “traditional” ways of starting a conversation, including a robust commenting section on the website as well as comments in our social media outposts. In fact, we have 350,000 comments on our site from over 200 million total visitors to the GoodMenProject.com website.
200 million! That’s a large conversation. And international, it is: Every month we have visitors from every country in the world, all 197 countries.
We have since become a participatory media company, changing the face of media in the 21st-century.
One thing we did right from the start was to differentiate ourselves from the way media companies were “supposed” to work. About a year after we launched The Good Men Project website, we started having Friday afternoon Evangelist calls. We have been having those calls every single week for 5 years, and every single week we get between 10 and 30 people to show up.
Our publisher, Lisa Hickey, tells the story of how important those calls became—both to the community and to her personally: “I remember one year, a while back, I had got spinal meningitis, slipped into a coma, became paralyzed over 95% of my body and had to have a tracheotomy tube put into my throat. And the DAY I got that tracheotomy tube out I hopped back on one of those calls, which had been taken over by another executive editor while I was in my coma. That was the only time in The Good Men Project’s history I had missed two calls in a row. And we have several people on those calls who have been showing up week after week for the entire 6 years we have had them. That is how valuable they are to our community.”
The conversation about the changing roles of men in the 21st century is without a doubt one of the most important conversations happening today. Our Friday calls are one of the hubs of that conversation.
