“Expectations are the chains that bind us to perfection”
People will always ask you, “What’s on your list of expectations?”
And they’ll tell you that finding the right person is all about ticking the right boxes.
But if you enter a relationship like you’re shopping with a grocery list, disappointment is inevitable — because no one fits an ideal mould.
Having standards (respect, kindness, shared values) is important. But don’t confuse them with rigid expectations.
…
EXPECTATIONS ARE MISLEADING
The problem with expectation lists is that they’re often unrealistic. Because they don’t allow for:
- Mistakes and growth.
- Past experiences and healing.
- Unforeseen challenges that shape a relationship.
Relationships aren’t just about enjoyment. They’re about education and enlightenment.
And here’s the twist: that education is the real joy.
When you learn, grow, and figure things out together, you get the full experience of love.
But when you measure someone against a fixed checklist, your joy becomes limited — and frustration takes its place.
So instead of waiting for someone to meet your expectations, focus on creating something meaningful together.
Because when you rely on expectations alone, your chances of failure skyrocket.
…
Replace Expectations With:
1. GOALS
Instead of expecting a perfect relationship, set a goal to build one.
Ask yourself: What kind of relationship do I want to create?
And then, communicate that openly with your partner.
Because instead of assuming things, you need to talk about them. Instead of waiting for change, take action.
…
2. GROWTH
Don’t search for someone who already meets all your expectations.
Because the truth is, no one will.
Look for someone who is willing to grow with you.
Maybe they don’t have perfect communication skills or emotional intelligence yet — but together, you can learn, improve, and evolve.
And that’s what makes a relationship strong.
Because a growth mindset is the key to any thriving relationship.
…
3. GRATITUDE
When you reach your relationship goals, appreciate them.
Because at one point, what you have now was just a dream.
Too many people miss out on real happiness because they focus on what’s missing instead of cherishing what’s present.
And gratitude brings contentment, whereas expectations bring disappointment.
…
The Shift
Drop the expectations. Drop the checklist.
Instead, build, grow, and appreciate.
Because the best relationships aren’t found — they’re created by two people willing to evolve together.
So stop searching for “the perfect person” and start becoming the right person — for yourself and for the one who truly matters.
