On Thursday, CNN reporter Jim Acosta asked Sanders to affirm that she doesn’t believe the press is the “enemy of the people,” a claim Trump has often repeated that was (softly) rebutted by his daughter Ivanka in a recent interview. Sanders refused to play ball, instead going on a mini-rant about how unfairly she’s been treated, not so subtly suggesting her Secret Service protection is a direct result of the media’s portrayal of her. Acosta pressed Sanders again, only to receive another non-answer, at which point he somewhat dramatically left the scene. He later tweeted: “I walked out of the end of that briefing because I am totally saddened by what just happened. Sarah Sanders was repeatedly given a chance to say the press is not the enemy and she wouldn’t do it. Shameful.” Sanders also managed to accuse the press at large of being the reason Osama bin Laden escaped the grasp of U.S. forces in the late ‘90s, referencing an old Washington Times story that discussed surveillance of a bin Laden satellite phone. “Because of that reporting, he stopped using that phone, and the country lost valuable intelligence,” she said. It’s unclear how and why she drew that conclusion, but her deflecting isn’t going over well. Over the past seven days, “Sarah Sanders” has just a 22 percent positive score on Social. Despite her most recent controversies, that’s actually the same percentage as her 90-day score. –Alex Shultz
