Love can be breathtaking — and brutal
Love is a beautiful, crazy, life-changing force. It can sweep you up on its wings, and it can crush you into a million pieces. And sometimes, the best thing a woman can learn about love isn’t to love another man — it’s how to love herself first.
This is the story of Emily — a woman who gave up everything for love, only to discover that what she really needed to do was give some of that love back to herself.
She thought loving him was enough
Emily was always the “giver” in the relationship. She was the sort of woman who’d do whatever it took to make her boyfriend happy. If he needed a ride to the office, she’d cancel her own plans and take him to work. If he’d had a rotten day, she’d stay up late into the night calming his bruised ego, even when she was exhausted herself. She felt that was what love was about — selfless, sacrificial, and everything.
And it did work for a while. Her boyfriend, Alex, loved how caring and supportive she was. But the longer it continued, something started to shift. Emily felt exhausted, annoyed, and… invisible.
She had invested so much of herself that she didn’t have much left for herself. She stopped going to yoga, canceled brunch with her friends, and even gave up on her favorite Sunday morning walks because Alex didn’t care. Emily’s world began to shrink gradually but inexorably.
The wake-up call
It was a subdued Tuesday evening when she reached bottom. Emily had spent the previous hour fixing dinner — Alex’s favorite, of course — when she passed by the bathroom mirror. Barely recognizing herself, she glared at her reflection. She was fatigued, depleted, and… unhappy.
The realization hit her like a pile of bricks all at once: She’d lost herself.
Emily had been so focused on making Alex happy that she had forgotten how to make herself happy. She had been bending over backwards for love, but what about loving herself? What about her own dreams, desires, and well-being?
That night, Emily promised herself: She was going to start loving herself the way she had been loving Alex.
The journey back to herself
Loving yourself isn’t easy, especially when you’ve spent years putting everyone else first. But Emily was determined. She knew that if she wanted to find true happiness — whether she stayed with Alex or not — she had to reconnect with herself.
Here’s how she did it:
1. Setting boundaries
One of the initial lessons Emily learned was about the power of the word no. She came to find that love does not mean giving up your needs each time. She started setting boundaries in her relationship, making it very clear that her time and energy were also important.
2. Rediscovering her passions
Emily dusted her yoga mat and enrolled in a class. She began taking extended strolls once again, indulging in the moments of solitude that helped her connect with something deep within her. She even spent time catching up with long-forgotten friends and allocated space for those activities that pleased her.
3. Practicing self-compassion
Loving oneself is not necessarily about bubble baths and spa days (although those are wonderful, too). It’s about being kind to yourself, even when you mess up. Emily started practicing self-kindness, reminding herself that she did not need to be perfect in order to be loved.
The biggest lesson
As Emily began to love herself more, something miraculous happened: Her relationship with Alex improved as well. He noticed the changes in her — the increased confidence with which she walked, the assertiveness with which she stood up for what she desired, and the fact that she actually appeared content.
And the irony is, Emily turned out to be a better partner because she spent less time trying to please Alex and more time pleasing herself. She wasn’t performing out of guilt or obligation — she was performing from a place of strength and respect for herself.
Final thoughts: Love starts with you
Emily’s narrative reminds us of the fact that the most rewarding relationship you ever have is with yourself. Loving someone else is wonderful, but never at your expense of being happy, hopeful, or even who you are.
If you’re lost, spent, or phantom in your relationship, take a step back and question yourself: Am I loving myself the way I deserve to be loved?
Because here’s the truth: When you love yourself, everything else falls into place. You attract healthier relationships, establish healthier boundaries, and know a richer, more fulfilling kind of love — both from yourself and from others.
So take a deep breath, glance in the mirror, and keep this in mind: You are enough. You are worthy. And you deserve love that makes you feel full, not empty.
And that love? It starts with you.
If this story resonated with you, share it with someone who might need a bit of reminding today to love themselves that little bit more. Because sometimes the best love lesson of all is how to love yourself first.
