You can tell a lot about someone by the way they look at you when you’re not easy to love.
When you’re tired, short-tempered, or just plain off — and they don’t flinch.
That’s when I think love stops being a feeling and turns into something steadier.
I learned this the hard way, somewhere in Lisbon, of all places.
I’d been traveling for weeks — sleep-deprived, low on patience, too many missed trains. The city was beautiful but I wasn’t. I snapped over something ridiculous, maybe a map or a wrong turn. I remember my voice going sharp. I hated how I sounded.
He didn’t snap back.
He didn’t make me feel small for losing it.
He just waited. Quietly. Then said, “You’re tired. Let’s sit down somewhere.”
And just like that — the storm left my chest.
It wasn’t a grand romantic moment. There wasn’t music. Just a small act of gentleness. But I’ve come to believe that’s where the real test of love lives.
Not in how someone celebrates you when you shine, but how they hold you when you’re unrecognizable to yourself.
In real life, you won’t always be easy. You’ll be quiet sometimes when they want you loud. You’ll say the wrong things, misunderstand texts, forget to check in.
And when the person beside you still chooses you — not in the dreamy, cinematic way, but in the I’ll-stay-through-this-too way — that’s when you start to trust.
It’s human to crumble.
It’s human to not be your best self every day.
And the right person won’t punish you for it. They’ll make space for your bad days, without needing you to perform your good ones first.
Maybe that’s love’s quietest miracle — not two perfect people finding each other, but two flawed people who somehow keep choosing to stay.
Not because it’s easy.
Because it’s real.
