Research shows that relationships between couples are strengthened by adhering to commonly shared rituals.
When I was married my x-wife and I had some rituals that reinforced our bond. The sap from that tree is a secret glue that keeps things from falling apart when splinters want to go their separate ways.
When I left the marriage, I lost the rituals. It was like having the legs to the table kicked out in the middle of dinner.
- If you’re not careful, one day you can be laying on your belly just to reach your dinner.
- If you’re not careful, just to reach your meal you find yourself bending over like a grapefruit hanging from a wispy branch.
- If you’re not careful, you find yourself in a perpetual bow to the meal you created, and that’s what you eat.
Today I find myself in a new relationship with new rituals.
Every morning I wake up to this beautiful face, sitting there looking at me. We say hello to each other. I rub his face and he licks mine. We hug and love each other up for a good 5 minutes, every morning, before breakfast, before coffee, before peeing, before anything. This is what can happen if you’re not careful. Sometimes its good to get the legs kicked out from under.

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
