I’ve been thinking about listening lately. Not the polite kind, where someone nods and waits for their turn. I mean the real kind. The kind that makes you feel like your words land softly somewhere safe.
It doesn’t happen often. But when it does, you can feel the difference immediately.
A Memory That Stayed With Me
A few summers ago, I was on a train from Florence to Venice. I started talking with a woman sitting across from me. I don’t even remember how the conversation began — probably something about the view. But at some point, I told her a story I hadn’t shared in years.
She didn’t rush in with advice. She didn’t interrupt to add her own. She just listened. Her eyes stayed with me, and every now and then she nodded, not out of habit but because she was really following.
When I finished, she simply said, “That must have been heavy to carry.”
And I swear — just hearing those words, I felt lighter.
Why Listening Feels Like Love
Neuroscience says that when we feel truly heard, our brain lowers cortisol (stress) and releases oxytocin (trust). It’s biology’s way of telling us: You’re safe here. Keep going.
That’s why we walk away from some conversations feeling drained and others feeling held, even if nothing was solved.
The Little Signs of Real Listening
- They’re not planning their reply. You can see it in their eyes — focused, not calculating.
- They notice the pauses. When you go quiet, they don’t rush to fill it. They let silence do its work.
- They remember. Days later, they bring up something small you mentioned, proof that your words didn’t just pass through them.
What It Taught Me
Love doesn’t always look like flowers or long speeches. Sometimes it looks like stillness. Like someone closing their mouth long enough to make space for yours.
I think about that woman on the train sometimes. I’ll never see her again. But she reminded me that listening is one of the rarest gifts we can give.
Because in a world where everyone wants to speak, the one who listens is the one who feels most like home.
