This December I participated in a writer’s challenge. I had to submit 300-500 word posts every day.
Here’s what I learned about myself:
I have a basket full of different ideas
I started the challenge with 10 ideas in mind, and now I have close to 40. What is exciting about this is that I can continue working on these pieces that will continue to help me develop the craft of writing for the next year.
But having ideas is not equal inspiration
I definitely experienced writer’s block during this challenge, and while the list of ideas helped, I still stared at a blank screen for what felt like hours. What matters is the action and typing away and achieving a flow state. Speaking of which…
When I get in a flow state I feel unstoppable
When I get into a flow state of writing, everything feels natural, and I feel like I can write for hours. The most challenging part is getting to the flow state, but once I am there it’s smooth sailing.
My journey as a writer is growing
I view my journey as a writer as an upward trajectory. I can look back at my old blog posts and journal entries from two to three years ago, and I can see a tangible improvement.
But I am nowhere near where I want to be
Seeing how far I have come is an inspiration for me to continue sharpening the saw and improve my skills in the following year, which means…
I will be a better writer in 2019
Not only do I believe I will be a better writer, but I also believe that I will be more prolific and more eclectic in my style. I will write more poetry and short stories as well as guest blog posts.
I am most grateful for having participated in the challenge because I think it was a great way to end my year and a preview of what 2019 will have in store for me.
