Racial disparity presents itself in the most subtle ways. Here’s a glimpse of how racism affects black lives.
The other day I read about an NPR interview with a teacher from De Moines, Iowa named Jamaal Allan who happens to be a white man. Because he has a “black name”, Jamaal Allan has had several racial encounters. It reminded me of the time a black woman told me that I did a good job giving my sons “employable names”. We never gave much thought to giving our sons ethnically ambiguous names but as this video demonstrates, having what is considered a “black name” can have dire consequences.
