I remember thinking that if I just tried harder, loved deeper, or waited longer, the person who kept disappointing me would finally change.
They’d go back to being the sweet, caring person they were at the beginning. But the truth is, some people never change and hoping they will only keeps us stuck in pain.
Hoping Too Much
When love starts to fade, most people know it’s time to walk away.
But for some of us, the moment things go wrong is when we dig in deeper. We tell ourselves,
“They had a bad day,” or “They apologized, so maybe this time will be different.”
We ignore the pattern because we’re experts at making excuses for people who don’t deserve them.
The problem isn’t that we’re foolish, it’s that we were trained this way.
Why We Keep Believing in the Wrong People
If we grew up with parents who were unpredictable sometimes cruel, sometimes kind, we learned to survive by holding onto tiny moments of love.
A single kind word after a day of coldness felt like a victory. Over time, this became our idea of love: pain mixed with just enough hope to keep us waiting.
As adults, we replay this same painful game. We chase after people who hurt us because deep down, we think love should feel this hard. When someone is actually kind and steady, it feels wrong even boring.
We might even run back to the person who treated us badly because that’s what feels familiar.
The Truth About Love
Real love isn’t about waiting for someone to change. It’s not about suffering through neglect, lies, or hot-and-cold behavior.
Love should be simple: a steady, kind connection where both people feel safe and valued.
But if we’ve spent our lives believing love has to hurt, this idea can feel strange even scary.
How to Break the Cycle
- Stop Making Excuses — It doesn’t matter why someone treats us badly. What matters is that they do.
- Trust Actions, Not Words — Promises mean nothing if behavior doesn’t change.
- Walk Away from “Almost” Love — If someone is only kind sometimes, they’re not the right person.
Believe in Better — We don’t have to settle for pain. There are people who will love us without making us beg for it.
Holding onto someone who hurts us isn’t love, it’s a habit. And habits can be broken. We deserve more than crumbs of affection. We deserve a love that feels safe, easy, and whole.
The first step? Stop waiting for someone to change. Start choosing ourselves instead.
