Achilles pain can make or break you. Thankfully, Dr. Austin has some advice to help ease your pain.
DEAR DR. AUSTIN: How do you suggest handling Achilles’ tendon pain, especially after 50? — ACHILLES HEEL
DEAR ACHILLES HEEL: The Achilles tendon is one of the thickest of the body and helps with plantarflexion of the foot and flexion at the knee. A great way to keep that area loose and to avoid injury is to stretch the calf muscle and avoid burst training. If the Achilles is tight, fast movements or training/playing sports on slippery surfaces can put too much stress on it causing a rupture.
Alignment of the bones in the foot, ankle and knee are very important. I often will adjust patients ankles, fibulae and patellas in cases of Achilles dysfunction.
