In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
Here it is 4:30 in the morning and I'm writing this column.
This has really become a fun project for me as I want to do my part in delivering good music to the people.
I want to do my part in providing some balance to the listeners out there who crave a bit more than mainstream is willing to push.
Though some of my recommendations do hit the mainstream, I try to dig deeper. Plus, I like my editor at Spin City, Mr Hannibal Tabu. [Editor's note: I LOVE YOU, MAN! But you still can't have my Bud Light …]
Let's get with the music.
- "Dope Girl Magic," Boog Brown
I got hold of this joint about two hours too late last week while reading going down my twitter feed. This female emcee is one of my favorite rising stars. She's out of Detroit and she has made my recommendation list before with "Baby Girl" and "My Love." I have a feeling this won't be the last you hear of Boog Brown. Girl got skills!
- "Mama Proud," Tito Lopez
I saw this video about a month ago and the song wasn't available or I couldn't find a link for the video. At this point it doesn't matter because I got the fire right here for your years. It's tracks like this one that mainstream radio should put more effort into promoting. Why? Because, who doesn't want to make their mama proud? Boasting is all good but let's put some actually emotion into the bars is all I ask for. How about you?
- "White Noise," Seye
If you've read my column before, then you know that sometimes I like to serve up some alternative sounds. This is one of those jungle beat grooves guaranteed to give your dance spirit a jolt. Seye (pronounced shay) came right on time today because my mood was gloomy due to a lack of sun in the sky. I need my vitamin D, yo!
- "Big Spender," Theophilus London
Yessir! Got another banger from Brooklyn's latest star, Theophilus along with A$AP Rocky. The subject matter fits today's bravado but the beat is laced with a throwback swing feel and I like thaaaaat! Bounce with it and imagine spending money.
- "The Fellowship," BRKF$ST CLUB
When was the last time you heard a crew that gave you that Souls Of Mischief feel? Well, that's what I got when I heard this one from BRKF$T CLUB. Don't get it twisted, they updated the sound bank though. The flows are on time and the crew got style on the mic.
In addition to checking out Brutha Gimel out tonight at Da Poetry Lounge, this week's entertainment in news goes to the youth in the poetry community. Check them out this week with slam finals.
Barring unforeseen challenges, Brutha Gimel's Spin City should be waiting for you, right here on Komplicated.com, every Tuesday afternoon.
