In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
Due to an all night recording session I am late getting this in.
Also, due the same said session I will make these recommendations short and sweet.
Let's face it. It's about the music anyway. Right?
- "Daughters," Nas
Many of you have heard this song cause it was >all over the internet this week (EDITOR'S NOTE: including a free download in this week's #musicmonday column). I recommend it!
- "Candles In The Sun, Blowin In The Wind," Miguel
Look at Miguel doing a socially conscious song. Reminds me of The Stylistics "People Make The World Go Round." I recommend this.
- "Slave Masters" (Jacques Renault Remix), Seun Kuti
You know anything Kuti related is worth a listen. So let's say, we recommend. This video isn't the remix version but I like the song.
- "B.o.B vs Bobby Ray," B.o.B
The present versus the future or the celebrity versus the unknown artist. Either way he's battling himself. If you ever plan on being successful, I recommend this.
- "Lemme See," Usher feat. Rick Ross
Usher has been putting in work for years so it's no surprise that he is on the list this week. This joint is slow and sexy, sooooo … I recommend it.
In addition to checking out Brutha Gimel out tonight at Da Poetry Lounge, here's where else you can find this talented troubadour.
Barring unforeseen challenges, Brutha Gimel's Spin City should be waiting for you, right here on Komplicated.com, every Tuesday afternoon.
