In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
Here it is, my column slightly transformed/
Just a bit a of a break from the norm…
This weekly column is usually quite heavy on Hip Hop and R&B music. What can I say, and I like what I like. However, I am a fan untraditional urban sounds. So, this week I will let you in on a few of them. Ya dig!
- "Tonight (Just You&Me)," Ne-Yo
Many are familiar with this modern day crooner. Ne-Yo has been putting it down for some time now but I've never heard one like this. "Tonight" has that classic hand clap rhythm of the jump jive era also made popular in the sixties with a new school club vibe. It suites his voice well.
- "Radio Girls," Phenomenal Hand Clap Band
More music to clap and have fun to. This is fun music right with slight post disco feel and I like disco music. Don't front like you don't like Rick James or some Earth, Wind & Fire. Ao why not give some new sounds a try? With a name like Phenomenal Hand Clap Band, I had no choice but to lend them an ear. I like clapping my hands and if I get a chance to do it phenomenally, all the better.
- "Baby Cops," Psychobuildings
This is a straight up new music artist for me but when I heard it, I was instantly reminded of classic new wave music. Tell me this doesn't sound like a modern "Another Brick In The Wall" by Pink Floyd or "Our House" by Madness. Listen to the lyrics though. they sound like they came from a old school rap song by NWA or something. haha. Baby Cops!
- "Jumanji," Azealia Banks
(Available in this week's #musicmonday column)
Yooooo! What can I say Azealia Banks is on some "crush the world" ish right now. She got style man. I feel like she might be a new and improved version of Missy. Girl got style and she can rhyme her but off. That's what hip hop is about, right? I almost wanted to wait until next week to hit you off with this one but I couldn't resist. This is progressive flavor yo!
- "Home Again," Michael Kiwanuka
This is the child side of the column. I figured you might like some acoustic rhythms in your life. Listening to "Home Again" can make us all reminisce or think of a place that makes us feel like home. A safe place. A good place, comfortable and stable. Close your eyes and chill for a moment. Be at home.
