Etta James, "I'd Rather Go Blind" (Lucky Paul Reworking)
It was a sad day for music when Etta James passed. Her influence on music spread far and wide. Of course, every musician out there that was inspired or intrigued by her work took to the studio to offer up some sort of tribute. Producer Lucky Paul's reworking of "I'd Rather Go Blind" is a great modern take on such a classic soul sound. It's clearly 2012 in style but does not completely overwhelm the Etta James vocal. Good job, LP!
Tha Dogg Pound, "Make It Hot" feat. Snoop Dogg
Rap is a dated art form by nature. It's has always been about the right now. Snoop Dogg is one of the few rappers that has been able to work across decades successfully. While most of us had written his homies Tha Dogg Pound off, they prove with this track that they still got it. This is 100% OG from start to finish. The track is distinctly California rider and the "hop" on it is too good. Kurupt's opening verse is made us do a triple take and slap ourselves.
Young boys need to step it up.
heRobust, "Facebook Lift"
I guess we're in a West Coast state of mind today. This electronic/experimental tune has a little G-Funk flavor that's undeniable. While we have no idea what the title means, the music is so good that it doesn't matter what it's called. Tight work by heRobust. We dig this one 360.
