Today, John McCain is a free man, while Donald Trump remains a prisoner of war. It is a war of his own small and cramped mind. John McCain has left this world with honor and dignity. Donald Trump lives, yet is prisoner of his sordid view of the world, and his inflated view of himself. He is a prisoner of his own war on truth. He attempts to hold our democracy itself hostage to his whims, his hatreds, and his vindictiveness. Behold the Prisoner in Chief who will not lower the flag for nor utter the name of the American hero who he often disparaged, and continues to disparage even in death.
Donald Trump is a prisoner of war of his own making, and a hostage whether it be on a golf course, at his fortress at Mar el Largo, or at one of his pumped up rallies. The walls of his prison are the seemingly boundless horizons of his ego and his tiny universe of self aggrandizement and puffery.
By refusing to keep the flag lowered during this week of honor and mourning for Senator McCain, Trump shows his true colors. Hs flag is the flag of the surrender of decency. Pathetically, you can still hear the rallying cry of the Trump faithful at his rallies…. “Lock her up. Lock her up!” May I humbly suggest a different mantra. Free Donald. Free Donald. Free Donald from the prison of the White House, where captive to his minders at Fox News he wanders the halls at all hours, self tortured, raving, and tweeting, a small man in a big cage.
Postscript: Very shortly after this piece was published, the POW in the White House, flipped under the torture of public opinion, and agreed to fly the flag at half mast until Senator McCain’s internment.
